I just published a guide for Realtors on how I use Google Alerts on my blog.

Google Alerts for Real Estate

For me, they are one of the best ways to:

monitor my brand
keep track of my competition
find leads
keep track of listings

They are super simple to set up, and deliver amazing results right to my inbox.

Are you using them? I'd love to hear how in case I missed something.

Might be a little late. Google has already shut down some Alerts services and the rumor is that it will get the Google Reader treatment very soon.

I am not looking forward to the change. I have more than five different alerts for each market I am following, based on our keywords. Unless there is a mass aggregator system that is going to replace this, I don;t know how much extra work this will lead to.

I like to use it to find other people that are writing blogs related to property management. I go to their website, read the article and leave a comment. It is a great way to get more involved in the community and also get links to your website.

Yea, Google Alerts is a great way to keep up with all the latest news. I often combine alerts with some quality RSS feeds. I find that google alerts often covers only the biggest news out there.

However, I am still trying to figure out how to divert all my Google alerts to a single folder in my Gmail account.

I love Google Alerts. I also use it to keep informed about events happening in my area so that I can network.

When monitoring your brand, make sure you create an alert for all the ways you might be referenced: your name, variations of your name, your company, your website, etc.

I'm fairly tech and social media savvy. If you have questions, feel free to ask me. We're all in this together. :)

You can set up alerts through Google to see what competitors are doing. All you have to do is sign into Google through the Google Alerts page.

Google Custom Forum Search

This Google Custom search may do a better job of searching the forums for some keywords than the old forum search does. The results do not include threads from the Asset Managers Forum however. To search that forum you will need to be actually in the Asset Managers Forum and you will need to use the old forum search below.
