I just bought a 2008 Miata a few weeks ago. I don't plan on taking clients in my car, never have. It's my money so I feel I should buy what I want. For a client, especially someone new to the area, i feel they need to drive their own vehicles anyway so they can kind of understand where everything is. I mean, they're planning to move there right? Better to see stuff for yourself and know where you're gonna be living before you actually make a purchase imo. Some people drive their clients around and that's cool or whatever, but most of the agents that I have spoken to don't.

But the transmission was quickly dying, and the gas mileage was never even close to advertised---the absolute best we were ever able to get was 21 under optimum conditions--most of the time it was 17-18, even under highway conditions.

How are you liking the Forte?

The Forte is doing great! Averaging about 37 mpg. Looking for a vehicle with towing/hauling ability, though.

I agree with most of the views here, that you need a nice presentable car in good shape, keep it clean, keep it reliable and you should be fine for most clients. But if you work in the high end of your market, then I tend to think you need to have a high end car that fits that exclusive community.

I drive a Honda CRV that I keep washed and looking nice. For MN winters it's nice to have the AWD.

I drive a 2005 BMW extras.

However, I choose not to drive to my appointments. I have an as needed driver.

Clients love that!
Couldn't agree more with comments here. As a realtor, if you drive anything but a luxury, new car, you have some explaining to do!
Not really... Just tell them that since you are smarter than other agents you would rather invest your money in real estate rather than throw it away.

There's no one correct answer here, you need to have a car that best represents you as a person, your lifestyle and your profession, as best as you can combine those. If you want to impress people with your car, then you need an impressive car. If you want to impress people with how little you care about material wealth, then your car should represent that sentiment. But don't pick up a wealthy buyer who cares about collecting the best of everything in a beat up 12 year old car and then expect them not to make a judgement about you and your car.

i drive a 1983 mercedes 300D that looks and runs like it's brand new and looks like it's off the showroom floor and gives me about 40 MPG. i can't wait to see peoples expressions when i pull up in that :). i was looking in the news paper one day and it the ad said car for sale and i kept thinking that is was car parts. and come to find out it was an old MB 300D i pulled the cover off and fired her up and she fired right up. the old lady just wanted to get rid of it since her husband had passed away and she didn't drive. i paid 50.00 bucks for it no kidding that's why i thought it was car parts. i stole that car. those cars go for alot more even in todays world they hold there value.

I think it is great the first post was in 2009 and we are still replying to the question. I guess this post must have passed the test of time.

i will say htat i notice a difference depending on the vehicle.......i have gone on more listing appts than most agents who tout "i've been doing this for 30 years". i can tell you that when i pulled up in a random car or nice suv, (car volvo, suv acura) people would still ask about how successful you next car was a mercedes...nobody asks me if i sell a sh!t ton of houses, they make an assumption that i, a couple of things have changed...i'm better now that i it could be that.......also, if you look like money, they make an assumption.....i play upon that and show up looking like money, so its not even a question anymore on how successful i sad as it is, people judge.....i know this and play upon that to get what i want..its how the world works.

i bought a mercedes over other "high end" cars simply because i felt is had the brand recognition as being more "costly" and wanted to project that to the people i am selling to.

you know the saying "fake it until you make it" it is true.

While I work with some top agents, I find they all drive newer, very nice vehicles. Clean and easy to get clients in and out of. I do feel your car drives the initial perception people will have of you. As a media guy, I tend to break some of the techie mold and drive a Chevy Silverado :-)
