With all of the insurance companies advertising that they each have the best rates, what steps should you take to figure out which one really is the best? I'm also concerned that a low quote may be great, but how do you know if their claim service is any good, should you ever need to file a claim?

I've been with SF for 30+ years, since I was a teenager, but what if I'm paying too much? I've never had a claim.

Take the coverage you have now and have another insurance agent give you a quote on the same coverage. Repeat with a couple different companies and you will know. Check consumer satisfaction reports for good or bad claim service.

Insurance agent can give you all the detail you need about it. You should try to have conversation with different insurance companies agents. Then you can get a nice decision.

Insurance companies often look similar, how do you know which is the best company for you? Price is of course is a top consideration, but cost is just one aspect to consider. Start by knowing your potential insurance company's strengths and weakness, compare coverage, make your own scoring system, and do not forget to check the policy term.

I agree with Shurdul. An agent can solve this kind of problem. They know everything about their insurance company.

Most helpful to me has been networking. I just asked around. Looked for people that have had to file claims and asked how they were treated by their agent and the company. People love to share the great companies and aren't shy about telling you about the bad ones. Best of luck!

For what it's worth in 2016, The A.M. Best Company provides an industry wide rating service for Life/Health, Property/Casualty and Title insurance companies worldwide.

Most any good business reference library will have access to a Best Directory.

Recognize too that this thread was begun in 2012; so the OP has hopefully satisfied his/her curiosity by now.

Hello,
Before choosing a home insurance company make sure it covers the services like fire damage, water/flood damage , storm damage , mold damage etc. In case you are not satisfied with the amount your company is willing to pay on your claim, you can hire a public adjuster who will represent the policy holder to maximize your insurance claim.

It's very important to consider the area you live in and compare who the bigger providers are. You should rely on your agent or broker to help weed out the minor players from the higher quality ones. In my area earthquake and fire insurance are the most important items to insure are included. In others, it's flood.

I used to have SF for everything until I met Ken. Ken insists on Geico for the vehicles but I'm the one who shops for the home insurance. I've been with SF, can't remember the 2nd one, Liberty Mutual and now Travellers. I would keep seeing HUD-1's where the homes sold for much more than mine own home's market value yet they had a lower rate (although I realize there are a lot of factors to also take into consideration); but, every year, without a claim (and I have at least a $1k deductible), my rates would go up and up. I was a little ticked for never having made a claim - who wouldn't be? So, once the yearly premium hits a certain level, I go shopping again. I use the same parameters I have always used as far as coverage goes and in one or two areas, increased it. My premiums are again, low...until the next time. I was amazed calling Geico because they have several different home insurance companies since car insurance seems to be their speciality, they farm out the home insurance.
