Hi there, brand new agent here looking for advice on using laptops. I currently have a desktop PC, iPad and smartphone. Is it necessary for me to get a laptop? Cost aside it seems inconvenient to haul and charge so many devices...like to be simple. I'd be okay to sell my iPad for a laptop if there are advantages....

For agents who have both a laptop and a tablet, how often do you use your tablet vs laptop?

Thanks!

I see no reason to own a laptop. My desktop pc and Ipad does everything I need it to. If I need to do something that my ipad does not support, I can use Logmein to connect to my pc and get it done.

Hi:)
I would say with things the way they are today an iPad is just fine for doing what you need to do. The only benefit of a laptop would be if you had to run software off a disc and you need a disc drive to do it. Chances are you want need to do that so the iPad is good.

Take it from someone who works on a computer all day every day. I travel a lot. A laptop is 100% the way to go. First of all, tablets still can't do what my laptop can. Isn't it better to be able to take your desktop PC with you, metaphorically speaking? I think your asking the wrong question. You should be asking "Why shouldn't I ditch my Desktop PC for a laptop?" You don't always have to lug it around. Leave it in the car and remove it when you need it. The fact is you'll have it on hand for whatever comes up. Ultimately, you will use your smartphone more than anything. But, the first time you need to draft a contract on the fly, you won't have to run back to the office or your house to do it.

A laptop is nice because you can duck into a cafe, hop on wifi and work with professional-grade tools for an hour or so during the day. I'm in a cafe on a laptop right now... this counts as work right? ;-)

If you go the laptop route, get something super light, I use a Macbook Air because I've been a Mac person since day one, however a lightweight PC version will do just as well.

A laptop is even better if you slap an "I <3 Real Estate!" sticker on it so people at the cafes and coffeeshops can read it.

It depends on what you do with them. Tablets operate using a mobile-first approach, especially when it comes to the operating system. If you ever need to do anything more than just look stuff up, I would recommend a laptop. Also much of the software you would want/need to use (efficiently) will not be available in a tablet. Tablets are just really big smart phones without the phone.

If you're the person who travels a lot then a laptop is a must. If you're the one who works at home then a desktop is enough but desktop plus a tablet or a smart phone would be a great idea. You know, you can't bring the desktop pc with you. :D

wow, I can't even imagine trying to exist without my laptop, I use it for everything! And everywhere! But if you can swing it, I think both a laptop and tablet make the perfect combination, hard to beat.

I'm hoping someone says that using the new iPad Pro is the way to go, so then I'll have an excuse to go buy one!

An iPad Pro is definitely the way to go! (You're welcome, haha)... I actually stopped in the Apple store on Saturday in Grand Central (while waiting for a friend) and the iPad Pro is pretty awesome. I like the fact that the keyboard case now has a physical connection rather than being bluetooth as it seems much more responsive.

I personally use a 13" MacBook and hook it up to a 27" monitor at home. It gives me the functionality of a Desktop while having the portability of a laptop. I could see the iPad Pro being a great mobile solution as it is much more powerful than a regular iPad but I still personally would prefer a laptop.

On a side note, we're all responding to a post for 3 years ago, haha.

Yeah times have changed. I now use a Macbook pro for just about everything. I still have that same desktop computer but no longer use it anymore. Ipad's are nice, but when it comes to saving documents, or getting contracts together they just don't work well for me.

i have been using chromebook now for a couple of years. i have one in the office, one in the home office, both 15" screens and an 11" screen i use around the house. pretty nice, fast, auto syncs everything, powers up fast, usable for multiple users, if you break it, buy another one and use login information and you are up and running as soon as you login (it happened), and they are cheap. best device for me personally and i'm pretty into tech, but like to keep it simple for speed and decrease downtime.

I use my MacBook Pro and iPhone for everything. I like having my laptop with me so I can walk over to one of the other agent's office or to the Brokers if I have a question. I like having my laptop with everything I need with me at home and at the office. The iPad just doesn't cut it for me.

Why debate over a device that's a few hundred dollars. You have your own work space, you set it up, and at the end of the day you have to live with it. Just try it out if you think it will help.

There is a big difference with the processing power btw a tablet and laptop. You might be able to get away with the iPad if you are only showing a quick list. The problem you'll run into is that some software are incompatible with the app interface on tablets. And storage space if you intend to save a ton of photos or work with documents.

I also have a MacBook and an iPad, although I mostly use my laptop, it's like a security blanket. The iPad is very useful, light, powerful, portable and the battery life is very good so I love it, I love to take notes, send emails, pics, etc. But when I need to get things done quickly and I'm on the go the laptop wins! It's a little bit heavier but I get things done so that's a huge plus for me.

I don't find any reason to buy a laptop. It is absolutely fine to have a desktop and ipad.

I would say it just depends on you.

I haven't had a day of work without a laptop since 2007. So for me, yes, it's a must. But, you can get by with a desktop or tablet. I would advise against only a phone, since it just takes forever to get things done.

Nowadays, there are some pretty cheap options for laptops if money is an issue.

Depending on your software systems that you have in place. With PDF Doc signing at your finger tips a bigger screen Tablet (10") would probably work. Although Laptops are definitely easier to type on you can get those add-ons for your Tablet as well... Even a miniature Printer if you need to print something can be added to a tablet for printing.

Laptop is must because it is portable. You can carry easily anywhere you want to go as well as it is easy to use.
