The public won't automatically give you any more respect if you are a broker rather than a salesperson. People want someone competent to work with and you'll need to convey that with your expertise and knowledge and not with your title.
Still, I'd aim for the broker license (even if you want to work under another broker). Later, get a GRI, CRS and ABR designation. You'll be more knowledgable, better able to serve clients, be in a better position to get referrals, and be more likely to succeed in your business.
