In Italy, there's an expression..."brutta figura". Some folks on this forum would do well to research what it means, and perhaps reflect on who they are as human beings.

This is America. The native language here is English. Business is conducted in English. Anyone who does not speak the native language of my country can do me a huge favor and get the hell out. The utter unmitigated audacity of human barnacles falling off boats on our shores or crawling under barbed wire fences and expecting Americans whose native language is ENGLISH to speak in their alien foreign tongues is astounding.

Hey Sammy. Plain and simple. Tu se provio no sfatchime! If I need moral advice from the Mediterranean, I'll ask for it.

Hey, while we're asking questions that were answered in our Realtor orientation class on the first day after we got our licenses...where do I put the film into my digital camera?

The Homeland Security Advisory System has now moved the hypersensitivity level from Yellow to Orange. Apparently, too many harsh responses to basic, remedial questions could push us into Red by the weekend.

Navarac-
Non vali una lira! Sei un malandrino!

You took the bait hook, line and sinker...I knew you'd respond with the "this is America - we speak English here" argument. Well, guess what - the orginal poster WAS WRITING IN ENGLISH, alebeit not great English! I guess we all can't have Masters in English like you. Sei una testa dura!!

Greg In Atlanta,
"Fare un brutta figura" is an idiomatic expression - a literal word for word translation of "brutta figura" doesn't really makes sense. It means something done in bad taste. But like many Italian expressions, depending on the context, it can have slightly different meanings like "to make a fool of oneself" or "to be cast in a bad light."

GregInAtlanta,
Adding some more context..."brutta figura" and conversely "bella figura" permeate through Italian life. In Italy, Italians go out of there way to be polite for fear of "brutta figura."

Greg, as you live in the South, you have the same thing. Although it's not called "brutta figura", there's a similar unwritten code of politeness that is followed and understood.

Here's a southern idiom for you:
"Bless your heart!" translates to: "You are so dumb".

I always wondered why southerners were so unfailingly polite to me...now it's so clear.

Hi Cars,
Navarac posts anonymously, so in his mind, he's free to act anyway he chooses and ethics don't apply. I'm sure in the real world, where people know his name, he's extra polite. Bless his heart!
