If I was going to a search engine to search for Realtors or homes, I would NOT be searching for John Jones.... if I KNEW John Jones, I presume I would already know who he is and how to find him! What I AM searching for is real estate in Chicago.
Again, let me repeat this AGAIN! Your selection of domain does not have a significant role in your search engine placement so why is that being used as an argument? Of course people aren't going to search for your name, that isn't what they are looking for, that's like saying when I'm looking for computer parts I'm going to go to google and type in "newegg" instead of "pentium 4 3.2 ghz."
Since domain names cost so little ($8 a year or so), it makes sense to have multiple domains INCLUDING your name - I mean it IS your name after all - but from a marketing standpoint I don't really think it's a good idea to use that as your primary domain.
There's nothing wrong with multiple pointers and common name pointers, but I'm talking about your MAIN business and domain name. In real estate, if you ever want to sell your business (including the online component), I don't think JohnJones.com will have as much cache as ChicagoHomes.com for resale.
I'm glad that's what you think but it's not really true. That's like saying "The Clothing Store" (weird I couldn't think of some BIG corporation with only common nouns) would bring more money than "Neiman Marcus" because of the proper name. Josh, Nobody is saying your comments are ridiculous, I can't understand why you can't have a debate and conversation without putting someone's comments down. I have to say, I too believe you are wrong in this case as I have a bit more experience in this industry than you and have personally been involved in three such transactions all of which had values that were affected by how the business was positioned. But, I agree on the search engine comments. I just read your post and see you are in Newhampshire.. It just so happens that I got www.newhampshirehomefinders.com I am going to make a web site out it some day, I am originally from New England and spent some summers in Stoddard NH

IMHO I would make sure it is easy to verbally communicate. I just changed my domain because it was very hard for people to understand. My domain was LivinSanDiego. It was a catchy phrase but when I tried to communicate it, people kept wanting to put g in the name. So I changed it to LiveIn. . . I am not really from SanDiego just using that as an example. I did not want to use my name because I want to be able to go into partnership with someone. Additionally, at some point I will have a team and I want them to feel part of a team. Just my opinions. Good luck picking a domain!!
