The way I see it, you really have to sit down and look at which senses and under which conditions is the prospect going to be exposed to your URL.

If I were planning to do a billboard lead generation ad I would prefer to use the hypenated version as it is more easily read than the URL that has the words running into each other when you are driving by quickly in the car.

If I were planning on doing a radio spot, I would definitely not use the hypenated URL.

I also think that one thing to remember with URLs is that the *URL* does not necessarily have to be the same across all of your chosen advertising mediums. Reason is that your target population won't necessarily be exposed to all the different medias that you choose to advertise your brand. For example, people may drive by your billboard each day on their way to work, but may never hear your radio spot.

As long as you keep your *business name* consistent you can tailor your actual URLs to each specific advertising medium without confusing the prospect and actually enhance retention by playing up/down to that medium's unique charateristics.

good points, i wasn't clear, if you have both it is not an issue if someone types it in without the hyphens, but if someone else owns the version without hyphens, then you are probably loosing traffic.

ChicagoHomes.com seems to make much more sense than JohnJones.com. There isn't one person on the planet earth that would question what ChicagoHomes.com is! JohnJones.com could be a Fuller Brush salesman!

If I was going to a search engine to search for Realtors or homes, I would NOT be searching for John Jones.... if I KNEW John Jones, I presume I would already know who he is and how to find him! What I AM searching for is real estate in Chicago.

Again, let me repeat this AGAIN! Your selection of domain does not have a significant role in your search engine placement so why is that being used as an argument? Of course people aren't going to search for your name, that isn't what they are looking for, that's like saying when I'm looking for computer parts I'm going to go to google and type in "newegg" instead of "pentium 4 3.2 ghz."

Since domain names cost so little ($8 a year or so), it makes sense to have multiple domains INCLUDING your name - I mean it IS your name after all - but from a marketing standpoint I don't really think it's a good idea to use that as your primary domain.

There's nothing wrong with multiple pointers and common name pointers, but I'm talking about your MAIN business and domain name.

In real estate, if you ever want to sell your business (including the online component), I don't think JohnJones.com will have as much cache as ChicagoHomes.com for resale.

I'm glad that's what you think but it's not really true. That's like saying "The Clothing Store" (weird I couldn't think of some BIG corporation with only common nouns) would bring more money than "Neiman Marcus" because of the proper name. Ridiculous, its more about your brand and image and what you have established when you are reselling it, than the name.

Josh,

Nobody is saying your comments are ridiculous, I can't understand why you can't have a debate and conversation without putting someone's comments down.

I have to say, I too believe you are wrong in this case as I have a bit more experience in this industry than you and have personally been involved in three such transactions all of which had values that were affected by how the business was positioned.

But, I agree on the search engine comments.

I think you have some great things to say but people will stop listening if you don't have a bit more common courtesy in a debate or conversation.

Where did I directly put someone's comment down? Aside from refuting what someone claimed, I never came out and said someone was "stupid" or such... Making strong points and bolding some words does not make it a "put down", maybe it comes off wrong on here.

Once again though, I'm not too concerned with what you guys choose to do, merely trying to help. I have plenty of marketing/web experience to know what the right way of doing things is and that is all that matters when making decisions in my business. If these guys want to post and tell a new person that buying more "common noun" domain names is better because it is better for the search engines, I don't appreciate that because it simply is not true.

Maybe.

I am just trying to make the board a bit more positive. I have been guilty of this myself.

IMHO I would make sure it is easy to verbally communicate.
I just changed my domain because it was very hard for people to understand. My domain was LivinSanDiego. It was a catchy phrase but when I tried to communicate it, people kept wanting to put g in the name. So I changed it to LiveIn. . . I am not really from SanDiego just using that as an example.
I did not want to use my name because I want to be able to go into partnership with someone. Additionally, at some point I will have a team and I want them to feel part of a team. Just my opinions. Good luck picking a domain!!
