How do I make my photo show up under my name? I placed the url to my photo on my profile but it doesnt show up.

I looks like you figured it out but for the benefit of others who may have the same question...

When you edit your profile there are two fields to be filled in that allow you to display your photo. The first field displays your photo in your Profile and the second field is for your avatar (which can be your photo if you like) - the graphic under your name in all your postings.

You can put any url you would like into the avatar field. So, if you have a graphic that you would like to use for an avatar you just enter the url where it resides into the avatar field as you would a link - in other words, the graphic has to reside somewhere on the internet and not on your hard drive.

to add it as your avatar, here is the step by step. maybe it will help more people.

go to "my profile"
then "edit preferences"
then scroll down to the avatar and click the link that says "Select a different Avatar Image"
a pop up will appear
at the bottom there is "use custom url"
put the url in, and then click "set url"
it will show in the top left. when you see it, click on "select this avatar"
the pop up will close.
scroll to the bottom of the profile page and click "update profile"

I don't get the "use custom url" field at the bottom of my pop-up with all the avatar images.

No place visible to enter the custom URL.

Depending on your computer's configuration, you may not be seeing all of the contents of the window. You may need to enlarge the pop-up window (by dragging the corner of the window and thereby making the window larger) in order to see all of the contents of the window including the field for entering the custom URL.

I am having the same problem. I'm not sure if you guys have used this feature recently, but there is NO section that allows you to put in a custom field. In the "Select a different Avatar pop-up window" there are only 3 buttons (Select this Avatar, No Avatar and Cancel). There are no other lniks or text boxes or anything. My windows is fully open, and I am not simply missing it.

I don't know why you are unable to see the window including the custom picture field - it is there. Have a look at the screen capture of the window that I just made... Click Here to see popup

I think I figured out your problem - you have to be a full Member of the forums to use the custom avatar feature. If you are just a Junior Member it will not be available to you. Once you have enough messages that you become a full Member you should be able to see the field - although you may need to "refresh" the popup in your browser if you had visited the popup as a junior member to force the browser to load a new version of the page.

Yup, now I see it.

However, can you tell us the required pixel size of the avatar.

Mine was a rectangle. Didn't look good when it was squared.

If your picture is a rectangle you can edit it in your graphics program to leave some white space on the top and bottom so that it keeps the original rectangular shape. For example, the picture below is 100 x 100 but it still looks like a rectangle.

Shrunk my original to much to do that. Tried another one. Now, can I get it to show. Yup!

As per the preceding posts, you need to be a Full Member in order to use the custom avatar feature. You are still a Junior Member

Where is the best place to go online to get a url set up for your photo???

Your own website would be the first place to consider and if you do not have a website then you can arrange for free webspace in a zillion different places. All you need to do is upload a photo to the free webspace and take note of the url when you view the uploaded photo in your browser. You would then enter that url as your "custom avatar".
