The problem with licencing in any profession is that it legitamizes the incompetent. Just because someone can pass a state mandated test does not mean they can perform properly in the field. Experience, Experience, Experience. A good home inspector starts with minimal knowlege and builds his knowlege base with experience. The more inspections that you perform adhereing strictly to your SOP the better you become over time. A piece of paper hardly replaces that.

No, it does not. It just makes sure that a person has at least minimal knowledge before entering a profession. It makes sure that a client is not getting a guy that was selling shoes yesterday, got tired of bitching from his boss, so he decided to hang out his shingle and become a home inspector.
Yes, there are plenty of people out there qualified to perform a home inspection that never had to pass a test to become one. But with a test, it proves that you have a reasonable amount of knowledge to perform the service. Does it make you an expert? Nope.
I find that the inspectors that fight the need for licensing are afraid of not passing the exam and losing their companies.

I agree mostly with Kevin, but I also agree that experience counts a lot.

There are stories in every industry that has licensing about incompetent and competent people having passed a test--attorneys, doctors, plumbers, electricians, etc.

There also are stories in every industry that does not have licensing about incompetent and competent people--store owners, retail managers, etc.

I agree with Kevin and Russel.

From what I understand the NHIE will be the test that TN will adopt. This exam scares many wannabee home inspectors as it should.
