I understand about the importance of backlinks from related websites to your site, but my question here is just how related the site should be?

For example, if if my website is targeting "Smith County real estate", I understand that links from other indexed real estate websites would be related and factor into my SE rankings. However, would websites that are about Smith County be considered related and be just as important to reciprocal link with? Examples would be - Smith County Tourism or Smith County Dining,...

Maybe a good rule of thumb is, If you think it is useful to your CUSTOMERS then it's a good link to have.
