Hi, I ran across this site web page they sell software to help with SEO and backlinks. This can't be legal or allowed by the search engines can it. The software seems to offer the ability to rank first on the search engines. Has anyone heard of these products before?

Wow, I didn't know that's all you needed to do to get to the top of the search engine rankings! There's tons of articles about SEO on the web. It all depends on how much money and time you want to invest. I found Brad Callen\'s series of articles to be informative. (look for the gray button that says "Yes, please send me the free traffic course") Try networking with closing attorneys, mortgage brokers etc whose websites show up in the search rankings. Do a search like "jacksonville florida mortgage brokers" and see who comes up.

I wonder how people get away with selling this type of stuff? If it were true everyone would be using it.

The Best SEO site I have read, and I have read a few is SEOMoz. They have a great SEO for beginners article that will give you a foundation in how SEO works and why it works. Very cool and many others charge a fortune for this information. http://www.seomoz.org/blog.php and the SEO for Beginners article http://www.seomoz.org/beginners.php

Check out a program called Web Position Gold. You put it on your computer and it analyzes your site and suggests changes that you make, instead of having some other company do it (or say they're doing it).
A lot of these companies just use this program and charge you a few thousand.

Also buy "Search Optimization for Dummies". You can get it at any Borders or B&N, or online. It'll explain exactly what SEO is. It definitely works, but it's time consuming and a lot of people just don't have any clue about it.

Lady Jax With SEO work it is a constant job there is no one thing cures all. Most people buy into these listed in 48 hours adds and link software but the truth is that SEO is about techniques from Meta tags to html headers alt tags navigation each of these thing play a roll in good SEO results. For example everyone like flash but spider can not read flash so you get about 6 lines of code in your web page that does not relate to any links or content to search engines so web sites that have flash for there navigation get no links to other pages in there site. I would be happy to run a custom report on your site for free just let me know. gene@justwebsitedesign.com

A great way to start in the SEO area is to read up on forums. My favorite is digitalpoint.com, just my opinion. There are a lot of people willing to help.

Another great SEO tool is Internet Business Promoter from arelis.com . Provides tools to compare your web pages to others that are competing for the same keywords. Lots of optimization tips, too.

The Poodle Predictor tool at http://gritechnologies.com/tools/spider.go looks at your webpages like the search engines. It's very useful because, as gene02 pointed out, they don't see alot of the eye candy on a webpage that makes it look pretty. This tool, combined with some basic SEO knowlege will do alot to improve your search rankings.

In terms of SEO knowledge, start with "SEO for DUMMIES".
In terms of SEO software, I've found SEO-Elite to be indespensable. Its a little pricey but worth it.

Like you say, some of these SEO tools are completly full of crap. I provide SEO services and I can honestly say that the most successful method of building links is manual. I had a look at just some of the websites that my site would be submitted through the submission tool and a couple were dog food stores and I saw no signs of links. Becareful of cheap solutions like these, make sure you do your research and get some referals. Fraser Pogue

This Google Custom search may do a better job of searching the forums for some keywords than the old forum search does. The results do not include threads from the Asset Managers Forum however. To search that forum you will need to be actually in the Asset Managers Forum and you will need to use the old forum search below.
