So I have an interesting question. My agent held an open house, signs, balloons, doors propped wide open.... and apparently got bored and walked a couple of blocks away to go shopping. The agent left a note on the counter saying they had gone down the street to the farmers market, for other agents, if they should walk through. The note asked them to leave their card.

My doors were propped wide open and there were signs pointing into my place. People were free to wander about. They could have stolen my things or vandalized my place. It was fairly empty, but I still had possessions in there. Valuable art prints, etc on the walls.

Is this normal? My gut tells me this is highly suspect. What should I do about this agent?

That's grossly irresponsible, for which there can be no satisfactory explanation.

I'd be reporting him/her to the Broker immediately, with the expectation of receiving an automatic re-assignment of this Agent and a replacement Agent . . . . or a immediate and complete Cancellation of the Listing.

PS: How do you know nothing is missing ?

Wow, that's appalling! I second what Vermont said.

Hopefully the Broker will take you seriously. If, per chance, the Broker attempts to blow you off (i.e., this is the top producer, his favorite Realtor, or "best friend"), immediately report them both to your local Board of Realtors.

Hope you'll return & let us know how this worked out.

Yikes!!!!

We've had broker's opens without an agent being there, but the agents would use a lock box that we would put on the house... and we'd also go there first to turn on lights, etc., and then come after to turn off lights and make sure everything is locked up. But to leave the doors wide open is crazy.

id fire them immediately. tell the broker, then file a complaint with the local association. also, if there is an electronic lockbox used, sentrilock or supra, i'd call them and report it there too simply to see if you can get their card access revoked and put them out of business. there is no excuse. if she wants to be something other than an agent, help her out with that.

this is not only normal but very very irresponsible. the type of contract we have here in Ontario says the agent and the brokerage is not responsible for any theft/damage of the property/content which is beyond their control. however, agent/brokerage is responsible for any theft/damage caused due to agent's negligence which is also in the contract. so in this event where agent left the house abandoned while went shopping is not normal and you have the right to seek for damage if there was any. you can also file disciplinary complaint to the licensing authority.
