Hello, first time poster here.

A few weeks ago, my wife and I noticed a small plant growing up through our ground floor living room carpet approximately 1 inch away from the baseboard. We just bought our newly-constructed house earlier this year.

We have a warranty with the builder. They think a seed or plant probably just got stuck down there during construction and advised us to pull it, spray a bit of weedkiller, and not worry about it. That sounds fine, but I'm very curious to get a second opinion from any inspectors out there--could this indicate a bigger problem? See photos here. Is the crack a bad thing?

We did pull the weed but now it's growing back again.

Thanks.

Your photo does not work but if you have a crack in the floor of a new house you should have it checked. Hire someone who specializes in foundations and find out if it is a problem.

That's a pretty unique issue, McWiggins. There is certainly a lot of growth energy locked into a single seed. However, seeds need a favorable environment to actually prosper. I don't think that location should have enough moisture or nutrients to promote plant growth.

Being so close to the outer wall, I would suggest you might look to see if an exterior plant has sent a runner through the wall, between the wall's bottom plate and the floor.

In any case, I would keep the builder advised until the problem has been resolved to your satisfaction.
