Hi,
I am a sales agent in CA and considering working with an unlicensed assistant as an independent contractor and paying him or her on a fee basis for the completion of certain tasks. Is anybody else out there doing that? Would there be any potential pitfalls? I am well aware of the CALBRE guidelines on the use of an unlicensed assistant, so no problem there.

Thanks!

A licensed assistant would be better, and you can still pay them as an Independent Contractor... It may cost a little more, but there are a lot of starving agents who would love to see a paycheck.

What's your Principal Broker think about this idea ?

I'd imagine s/he'll be responsible for your new hire's actions.

I don't see anything wrong with doing that at all. It is a smart way to do business.
