I really should know this considering I just finished my classes and state test, so I really feel stupid, but I guess theres only one way to find out, ask. So here it is, I would appreciate any input.
I am about to associate with a broker in Indiana, and I also want to get my license for Illinois since I live so close to the border (5 mins to be exact), so I was wondering, can I do it? If I can, do I have to also associate with a broker in Illinois?

I think you are ok to do this.
I cannot say for your specific state, but I know that there is no provision in California that prevents me from holding a real estate license in another state.
I also know that Hawaii, Washington State and Texas will all allow me to hold a license in their state while I also hold a license in another state.
I have actually never heard of any state saying you cannot hold a license in another state if you hold one in their state and would guess that you are clear to go ahead and get your license in Illinois. Somehow, I get the feeling that any state trying to make it illegal to hold a license in another state would be in violation of preserving interstate commerce and would therefore get in trouble with the feds.
I would move forward with the process and just answer honestly if at any time the paperwork asks you if you have a license in another state.

I'm sure there are many around you who do it. Ask your broker, I am sure he/she will encourage it. I do not hold a dual license, but I am originally from a border town. It amazes me what my fellow agents back home have to do, know, and how far they have to travel in their business. Not to mention being a member of two separate associations, too. But it's crucial in some areas. --A

Check with your state Real Estate Commission to see which states have "reciprocal licensing". Many agents in my area have licenses in other states, but their broker has to be licensed there also.

I believe the short answer is yes. I am licensed in Iowa and Illinois and my broker had to be licensed in both. I was fortunate that my broker is also licensed in both.

I just got finger printed at the Sheriff's Dept. last week for my Idaho RE license. The FBI is back logged for 2 months so everyone can expect a 2-3 month period before you can find a Broker in your new state and submit your application.
The reciprocity agreement between ID/MT is very relaxed, requiring that I only have an active and insured license in one of the two states.
It seems that the heavily populated N.W. states like Washington/Oregon do not have any such transferable agreements.

This Google Custom search may do a better job of searching the forums for some keywords than the old forum search does. The results do not include threads from the Asset Managers Forum however. To search that forum you will need to be actually in the Asset Managers Forum and you will need to use the old forum search below.
