I'm not debating whether the Cloud is good or bad. Just understand its a new buzzword to package services that have been around for a long time.
You are right as far as the cloud not being anything new, the idea of Cloud has been around since the first computers were put into operation over 50 years ago, but its important to realize that there are different levels of Cloud, any hosting company can set up a large enough server and call it the Cloud, and this is mostly the case with the current Cloud systems that are based on the old computer technology which we have become accustomed to for the past few years.
The new generation Cloud that soon is going to revolutionize everything about computers and computing is based on the recent advances in the computer chip technology and the combined efforts of the private and the government sectors who are in the process of building a few strategically located super data centers around the globe. Data is going to be stored and updated simultaneously in several Cloud stacks so that even if one data center malfunctions or is wiped out completely due to natural or manmade disasters the system can still continue to function without interruption. Unlike the current Cloud systems that are being run by individual companies the new generation Cloud is a shared project amongst some of the giants in the computer industry. I guess we just have to wait and see how all this is going to pan out in the near future, but one thing is for sure, its not going to be business as usual anymore.
