As you know I am on the quest to finding the right brokerage. I am working at one doing the admin to learn the ropes. It is very confusing at times, especially when it gets busy.

Anyways, yesterday I asked one of the managers to help me with something. I think I ask a lot of questions, and he came to my computer and said to press this button, and I pressed the wrong one. The he says to me, 'are you [censored] deaf'.BTW, he was not joking.

I was shocked, and didn't say anything. Then he was trying to figure out something and couldn't resolve the problem. I explained to him that computer is acting up all day, and he pressed a key that I said not to that screwed up the computer. Then I said who is deaf now.

Is this a bad sign or a bad day.

Good one . . . . I think I'd leave it alone now. Only the two of you need to know about the incident for the time being.

Despite being flustered, he'll remember it well . . . . Very well.

To me it would all depend on how we get along...if there's some swearing but I get along with the manager and have a good relationship, I would stick with them but if I were just starting out and didn't know the manager, I would be concerned.

In your example, I would actually be more concerned with the tone it seems like the manager was giving you, they were not very encouraging and that could be a sign of problems in the future. If they snapped over something as minor as missing a key, what happens when you make a bigger mistake?

Like Rob says, it depends on your relationship with the manager. Is that the way you speak casually throughout the day? If so, you might be ok. However, if not, it might be a sign of things to come.

I once made a pretty huge mistake with a deal. I had to go to Broker and give him the scoop. He looked at me asked if I was a Dumb A$$. Did not offend me at all, he got his frustration out and went into fix mode.

If your feelings get hurt when your Broker cusses you out, you will probely cry when you get cussed out by an irrate Realtor, client. You gotta have a thick skin in this business.

Punch him in the throat next time he talks at you like that (jk) -- but seriously, you don't need a Real Estate pro to tell you how to be a respected member of the workplace... also... make note of this incidents; write down the quotes/date/times/witness names.

REO, I have a thick skin, I worked with drug addicts and street kids for 5 years before I got into real estate. You try doing that and then we will talk about who has the thick skin. I left that brokerage anyway I found a much better fit. As a newbie like me I dont need any coddling but I expect to be treated with respect, I don't think that has anything to do with having a thick skin it is about how I should be treated in a so called professional environment.

Yeh, I was going to say that this is very unprofessional and I would have told him so. You never, never, never cuss someone who you want to respect you. *rolls eyes*

I suggest you watch the movie, "Glengarry Glen Ross" and then you won't feel as bad. Especially the scene with Alec Baldwin.

Good luck!

Thanks--Mario

I happen to agree completely. You do need to have a thick skin in the industry, but there is also a certain amount of professionalism that should come from people.

Lol - best advice yet I think smile ..(also joking)

But in all honest its a work environment and think it happens too much in the industry. Have seen quite a few brokers and/or managers get carried away and start cussing even when it is no fault of the person on the other side....people just need to learn to stop getting so pi$$ed off lol

Many years ago I was working as a waitress in downtown Chicago. It was my first day. I was there only 45 minutes....waiting on people etc...and I hear the owner swearing at a coworker:"mutherf.....this mutherf...that etc....The female owner had an unbelieveable potty mouth...she wasnt even yelling at me.But I took my apron off, left my tray on the table and walked out midshift! That was the shortest time I ever spent on a job!I knew eventually she would be swearing at me and I wont put up with swearing at employees....dammit!

Having to rely on profanity indicates an inadequate vocabulary; and a human organism which cannot otherwise express itself. It's pitiful.

Lucy, I worked in a restaurant with a chef/manager who was like that. Every thing out of her mouth was profane. I stayed there for a little while but I didn't last long either. It was not a healthy environment.

That was wrong. Period. True, you need to have thick skin for the crazies that you have to deal with out there, but a level of respect should always be maintained with coworkers. A manager, coach, or someone in a position of leadership should never speak to their subordinate like that. It's probably a sign of a greater underlying problem (lack of leadership skills) that that manager has. I would try to work with someone else in your office, or like you said "find the right brokerage."

you got him back, so it's okay. in my opinion, profanity among co-workers is okay, provided you have a comeback that is even better.

--------------------------------------------------------

let's say the above actually happens on a daily basis. All employees and managers are engaging in very profane language, trading insults, etc.

question...legally, would anyone in that environment have grounds for a "hostile work environment" lawsuit or government complaint? why?

I'd leave the brokerage and announce the reason at the next sales meeting.

I disagree. First of all, in this case, it was a member of management who blew up and used profanity. The OP is not a member of management - so they're not equals, not true co-workers.

And even with co-workers, not all people talk this way or want to work in that sort of setting. Everybody has to agee 100% that the language, and whatever else goes on, is ok before it's not a hostile work environment.

Thirdly, this behavior will slop over into the public arena where customers & clients can and will hear it. That's really unprofessional.
