That was wrong. Period. True, you need to have thick skin for the crazies that you have to deal with out there, but a level of respect should always be maintained with coworkers. A manager, coach, or someone in a position of leadership should never speak to their subordinate like that. It's probably a sign of a greater underlying problem (lack of leadership skills) that that manager has. I would try to work with someone else in your office, or like you said "find the right brokerage."

I was shocked, and didn't say anything. Then he was trying to figure out something and couldn't resolve the problem. I explained to him that computer is acting up all day, and he pressed a key that I said not to that screwed up the computer. Then I said who is deaf now.

you got him back, so it's okay. in my opinion, profanity among co-workers is okay, provided you have a comeback that is even better.

let's say the above actually happens on a daily basis. All employees and managers are engaging in very profane language, trading insults, etc.

question...legally, would anyone in that environment have grounds for a "hostile work environment" lawsuit or government complaint? why?

I'd leave the brokerage and announce the reason at the next sales meeting.

I disagree. First of all, in this case, it was a member of management who blew up and used profanity. The OP is not a member of management - so they're not equals, not true co-workers.

And even with co-workers, not all people talk this way or want to work in that sort of setting. Everybody has to agee 100% that the language, and whatever else goes on, is ok before it's not a hostile work environment.

Thirdly, this behavior will slop over into the public arena where customers & clients can and will hear it. That's really unprofessional.
