I recently bought a home. A representative from my homer owners insurance took photos of both the inside and out. Then they called me up and asked when I was going to paint the barn. They didn't ask IF I was going to paint it, but WHEN.

This is normal?

Yes . . . . if you're expecting them to cover it, then they're expecting you to maintain it. And keeping a coat of paint of a vulnerable asset is considered normal maintenance.

Your Coverage is probably predicated on that assumption. Without normal maintenance, if you were to suffer a loss, coverage could be denied because you weren't maintaining the asset.

Boring as it might be, take a few moments (hours) to read your Policy.

Never thought of it that way for the insurers’ perspective. That’s a good question to ask on their part. Not if but when.

Yep, they are making an investment into the future of the house just as you are, too. Plus, you would want the resale value of the entire property to be as high as possible just in case you might need to claim an insurance waiver.

Definitely normal part of the process. You have to maintain what they are expected to insure.

As some others have stated, the insurance company is certainly going to want you to paint the home and expect you to keep it and other maintenance issues in check.
