Good luck Adam on your goals. Mine are not so much business related by personal. I started running last year and I have become hooked on it, averaging 20-25 miles a week. My goal is to run a half-marathon come this summer which is 13.1 miles. People ask me if I would like to run an entire marathon some day, but I don't think I will. I have been reading more and more studies that show that kind of lengthy physical activity can really put too much stress on your heart. http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-03...tudy-finds.html

The 1/2 is a very fun distance Brad. I am a former, hope to be again runner. I ran 3 of those and 1 ten miler. You need to choose a nice relatively flat course, IMO.
And you do not need to train 13.1 to race 13.1.
Get it up to around 11 and pull the rest out of your gut on race day.
Way to go.

Way to go. Thanks Doin'. I am at the point now where I can run back to back 10Ks without being too sore. That's both hard surface and/or treadmill. I want to slowly push myself to 8, 10 then 13.1 distances. This is all from starting from scratch last year. I remember running my first 5K last July. Now a 5K to me is a minimial run. I want to feel that way about an 8-10 mile distance, and then run the half-marathon. Fortunately I am in Florida, so I don't have to worry about hills.

With 4 young children I get little chance to do things alone. I have set a series of walks, bike rides and work outs to be done for the year, however each has to be done with one or more of my family members. It is s nice way to balance my goal of self improvement and being a better parent by spending time with my kids and teaching them good exercise habits. It is an ambitious goal in it's own way, though not as physically challenging as a 1/2 mile, perhaps it requiring as much determination and committment.

My goal is to attend zumba class twice a week - Mondays & Fridays, 4:45-5:45. And to walk a minimum of 3 days a week after I get home from the office -- with each pup, which will get me a nice walk with a frisky dog practicing his obedience skills (so a little more challenging than simply taking a walk through the neighborhood, haha). Real estate-wise, my goal is to complete the broker's course online & pass the test for my broker's license. After that, I'm going to finish the Fair Housing course I started (and haven't yet finished) so I'll have a certificate to hang up on the wall, which will look good since I 1) am a big supporter of equal opportunity housing and 2) list & sell HUD homes.

Hey Brad, glad you're enjoying the running. It is definitely a challenge! I used to do cross-country in high school and platoon runs, etc. when I was in the Marine Corps. Then I quit...
Fast forward to last year, I picked running again as a way to help me drop a few pounds. Dragged the old treadmill out of the garage, and started plodding away. Just getting a couple miles out was tough at first, but it got easier and easier...and more and more fun. I ran my first half-marathon in November (great fun!) and in 7 weeks I'm doing my first full marathon. Plus I'm down 45 pounds from a year ago, and I haven't felt this great in a long, long time.
Now my wife--who has always said that running is something that should be done "away" (as in, running AWAY from an attacking grizzly bear)--has picked it up, and she might even be doing a half-marathon later this year as well.
Anyway, good luck on your training progress. Be sure to pay attention to your post-run stretching and mid-run nutrient replenishment--they become more and more important the further you run!

I have set a series of walks, bike rides and work outs to be done for the year, however each has to be done with one or more of my family members. I have made progress, but am a little behind due to short days, inclement weather, and sickness (nothing too serious thank goodness). I had it where I needed to do 16 events per month to complete my goal, and after falling a little behind I need to complete 18 events a month for the next 10 months. I will use spring, summer and fall to catch up and get ahead so when winter comes again I won't be struggling against heavy headwinds. With the longer days and warmer temps this should be a snap.

Awesome, can't wait to hear how you did! Thanks Adam, Andy and 'Doin for your support. I may postpone my half-marathon for a few months. In my preparation for the race, I am hitting an eight mile "wall". This is a similar feeling that I had last year when I first started out with a two mile wall. My shins get very sore when I try to go more than eight miles at this point. So to avoid injury, I am reluctant to strench my maximum distance for now. I am running with newer shoes, so I know that is not the problem. I am sticking to three to four times a week 10K runs (6.2 miles) and expanding on that on days I really feel good. Sorry to turn this into a long running post, but trying to explain where I am at with my half marathon goal at this point.

Brad, that is good practice, though. If I recall 2 pieces of--do not ignore--advice, they are...1) Listen to your body & 2) Do not run through an injury.
Get on a bike or get in the pool if you have to stay active. The race can wait.

This Google Custom search may do a better job of searching the forums for some keywords than the old forum search does. The results do not include threads from the Asset Managers Forum however. To search that forum you will need to be actually in the Asset Managers Forum and you will need to use the old forum search below.
