I am an aspiring agent and my husband is also interested. I was wondering what your thoughts are in regards to husband/wife teams- pros and cons. So far I see a pro as we get a 10% discount off our online class.

Here's a link to a prior discussion on the subject: Working with a SpouseBy using the Search Feature over in the right hand column ----> You'll find that there are many threads created already on tha same topic of Husband and Wife Teams, Spouses, Family Real Estate Businesses, et cetera. Just remember to embed "multi-word searches" in quotes.

My wife got licensed about 3 years after me so we have been a team for over 8 years. It took a few years but we have gotten most of the bugs worked out and know almost exactly each others responsibilities on listings and buyers without even discussing it. My wife is the most organized person I have ever met and is a great assistant in real estate...she rules the roost in the house though so I have to be nice to my "employee" or supper might be cold.....the couch does sleep pretty good though.

My wife just got her license. We work at the same company, but we aren't really being a team. As I don't really understand the need to be an actual team. I'm doing her training, but I suspect soon she will have more business then me as she is the one spanish speaking agent in our company of 26 agents so she gets all the calls looking for a spanish speaking agent. This is fine with me. I eventually would like to get out of the real estate business.

The only con I can imagine has to do with spending too much time together. But that isn't really an issue for some couples. The advantages are pretty clear: You're working w/ someone you can trust, you share in the rewards, you both have the same agenda, etc.

I think it depends in part on how well you can set your boundaries. My wife and I worked together for several years before I went into real estate. After awhile, work became almost all-encompassing: no matter where we were, I was still hanging out with a co-worker, and half of our after-hours discussions wound up being about work. Not to mention, after spending hours commuting together, then being in the same suite of offices all day, then commuting home together, quite often we just wanted to NOT be around each other once we got home.
Yes, it was great working with someone who I could count on to be honest and trustworthy...but it did also place other strains on our relationship to which we had to adjust.
Now, a far as real estate is concerned...My highly unscientific observations have suggested that husband/wife teams tend to be more successful than teams of unrelated agents. With both partners in the field, each can appreciate their partner's unpredictable and hectic schedule (this also seems to be true in the scientific field, where I worked beforehand). And often, the balance between each person's strengths and weaknesses that makes them a successful couple also makes them successful partners in business.

This Google Custom search may do a better job of searching the forums for some keywords than the old forum search does. The results do not include threads from the Asset Managers Forum however. To search that forum you will need to be actually in the Asset Managers Forum and you will need to use the old forum search below.
