I recently took out a 2'' x 4'' ad in the biggest newspaper in my area that will run for an year and I paid $500.00 (got a good deal because I sold them!).

I would like to know what your response has been from newspaper ads in the past?

Can anyone share tips and success stories with me?

Thank you

The newspaper is an alright medium to use to create a client base. But with the rise of technology the internet is one of the best places to get your name out and advertise yourself. The other positive aspects of the internet include it is relatively less expensive than what you paid for a newspaper add. It is all about just staying ahead of the game and knowing where the highest client traffic will reach your business model. Good luck!

Daily newspaper, weekly, monthly? If this is a daily ad for a year, you got a great deal!

Newspapers used to be the best place to gain clients and get your name out. But the new trends in the world are starting to stray away from this. The amount of individuals who still thumb through a newspaper looking for real estate is declining quickly. This is due to the clarity and ease that the internet provides. My advice to you is to breach this part of the market along with your newspaper adds. By creating even just a basic site on the internet that customers can browse over is a great way to bring in more client opportunities.

Agreed, I think with Facebook quickly approaching 400 million users and Linkedin around 60 million you can get great responses from these sites, and they are free.

Hosting a website for $5 per month and putting up good content will attract clients to you.

Sure, obviously times are changing and technology moves lighting-fast, by the time you get used/learn something the next bigger and better thing is coming up. But I wouldn't necessarily discount newspaper ads (although I would make that a very small part of my marketing budget), whenever I go in to starbucks on Sunday mornings, I see many older people sitting down reading the paper (a few months ago, while I was standing in line, I overheard a complimentary conversation regarding a realtor's ad).

I would rather invest that $500 into a PPC campaign and get around 50-100 leads off of it, at least. Many Realtors are staying away from newspapers now, as the results can not be compared with Internet.

I took the ad in the paper because I wanted to get my name out their and wanted to be branded so that everyone remembers me, my face and slogan!

It's the starting point of something bigger!

If you choose to use print media for advertising, you must be very careful which media you use. For instance, Montreal is a huge market and the media is bi-lingual. So a large general circulation newspaper which covers a great area is not a good investment. And unless you wanted only French speakers (or English speakers) you would need to advertise in both. It is cost prohibitive and reaches an audience spread over a large geographic area.
I assume for $500 you are only advertising in a small local area, such as a regional edition or a suburban weekly.

Did an open house on Sunday here in Cajun country. I was the only agent in the Parish (county) doing an open house. So where did the newspaper put my ad you ask?? They buried it in a crease amongst all the featured listings. Reason number 1,457 why I am shifting more to the internet.

Yes, I am targetting the west island suburbs of Montreal!

I have an ad in the paper every week for 1 year at $500.00, this allows me to get my face, name and slogan in peoples face on a day in/day out basis and it will help in the long run.

Right now I am trilingual and speak French perfectly, so I am not worried with who calls me ;-)
