I found a great tool for tracking mileage. It is TripBook Logger by Gisteq. It is awesome! You plug it into the car adapter before your trip begins and than into the USB port on your computer when you get home and download the trip. Very easy. I will say that the manual isn't that great, but all my questions were answered in the troubleshooting section.

It tracks your miles and lets you designate them as business or personal. AND you can print an IRS compliant trip log. I ordered it for $70 at www.gisteq.com.

(I'm so excited to make a contribution here. yay )

Happy New Year.

That sounds like something I need. That is always one of my new years resolutions is to keep better track of miles. Then by March I'm all messed up.

Also go to ebay and they have it for 49.95 with free shipping. I might get it, being that I am bad at entering my mileage at the end of my trip.

There are a couple apps for blackberry that do this same thing. I tried a Demo one and it worked alright, but I never bought it then forgot about it. Maybe this sitting right under the radio would keep me from forgetting about it.

I had a problem remembering miles until I incorporated my business. Now the Business owns the vehicle I drive, I get to depreciate the vehicle over time, all miles driven are business related, no more keeping track. Plus all the other tax advantages of being incorporated.

I keep really good records for a while, at least 6 months, then I back off for the rest of the year. Don't take my word for it, since I am not a CPA and cannot give tax adice, but I project mileage for the year based on records kept over a period of time. I compare this to my actual miles from odometer readings from 1/1 and 12/31. I go with the lower figure, but they are ususally very close.

ITune has a very good application called Trip Cubby. I just downloaded it. I'll let you know how it works.

I've been reading about the Gisteq and other trip loggers. In fact, I put a Gisteq in my Amazon shopping cart last night. I think I'll go ahead and order it, in spite of my fears that I will have software problems with Windows 7 or Vista (read the user reviews on Amazon).

I have a truck tha I use soley for my rehab properties an BPOs. I have always just tracked the mileage at year's start and end and used the standard mileage deduction.

Should I really be logging every single mile in a log? Saying that all we use the truck for is business purposes isn't enough? Shoot, we don't even park it at home - it is at a rehab property 100% of the time.

Thoughts?

LND, I did not worry about mileage when I had two cars. my accountant did the start/end of year calculation and all was well. He said I have to be more specific now because I have only one car this year.

LIZ, I've been using Gisteq for about a week now. So far so good and I use Vista.

I just got the Gisteq the other day. It works good for me. The drivers and software that came with it didn't work with Windows 7, but the drivers and software I downloaded from their website did. From testing one day it appears to stop the recording of one trip if you stop moving for I'd say at least 15 minutes. That might prove interesting for we agents as when showing homes you usually spend at least 15 minutes in every home. Then when you start moving again it starts another trip. I could be wrong though as this is one day of testing it.

I'm really hoping this will really assist me in my keeping mileage issues. The device works fine.

Colo: You can merge trips.

I also had some problems getting the drivers to work with Windows 7, but I think I have it up and running now (downloaded drivers from the internet). I believe this will be a great tool for me.

Quarterly estimated taxes have inspired me to do a better job of keeping track!

Candy,

The CD has a user's manual. The printed documentation is pretty skimpy.

So after a few months of using this product I was just wondering how is it overall? Are you still using it and logging it every day?

I might find that logging it every day and syncing with the computer might be a little much. Maybe every week or so but that is just me. Not sure if the usb drive you plug into the car has enough hard drive space to hold a week worth of traveling or 1,000 miles or so?

Any info would be great I think this looks like a great tool.

Thanks,

I bought this product has january after reading about it here and it works fine for me on ThinkPad and XP. I am now just going a whole month before downloading and still no problems. I did not keep up on daily downloads so it went to a week then two weeks and then a month. Because I use both truck and sedan it goes with me into whichever I am using that day.

I've also been using this since January and happy to say that I still am using it and it works great. I haven't forgotten about it like I do with just writing down mileage. I do like you Roy with using two vehicles on a regular basis. I think this might almost be a must have gadget for real estate. Especially for those like me that are lazy. smile

I download about every 2 months. Not ever day. I'm not sure the memory space in this USB key, but I'm fairly sure mileage text doesn't use much memory. The GPS software probably takes the most memory up.

Colo, you mentioned GPS. Does it have that feature also or is that just internally for the mileage? This sounds like a gadget I could really use, but I plug in my GPS in the lighter thingy. So, if it shows that on a screen, that would really be cool!
