We are located in Louisiana and about a gallon of NON TOXIC (pink) antifreeze in the traps for one house usually does the job. It costs about $4.00 a gallon down here.
We have several sized compressors, the smallest is a pancake type (electric) and it does just fine. I think its about 2.5 gallons.
BTW We are State Licensed Contractors and the vast majority of winterizations in this area does not require a licensed plumber.
For instance:
Draining a water heater does not require a plumbing license.
Draining water lines does not require a plumbing license.
Blowing compressed air into the water lines does not require a plumbing license.
Verifying that the water lines hold pressure does not require a plumbing license.
Pouring pink antifreeze into traps does not require a plumbing license.
Placing stickers on fixtures does not require a plumbing license.
However, you should have a least a basic knowledge of how plumbing works in your area before attempting a wintz.
As far a licensing goes, I am writing about the areas that we cover. I do recommend that you check with your local municipality to determine if you have to have a license in your area.
