I have watching the real estate market in my area for some time now. I am going to start my real estate classes this week, and realized i never put any thought into what area i should focus on. Is that what most new agents do? I live in a larger city, so i don't think it would work selling all over town. The area i have been thinking of recently was the homes surrounding the University. I have a very good knowledge of the area because when i went to school their, i lived off campus in the area. I also know a lot of people in the area, and still live close. My questions are, is this a good way to start when i get licensed? How do i do some research on the area other then zillow? I want to learn everything i can about the area if that is my focus, like are the majority of the buyers in that area investors, first time home buyers...

Please let me know if this is the wrong way to go about this. I want to be as prepared as possible when i am ready to sell. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Focus on passing your test right now. The when you pass the real world begins. Don't take in the real world now as it will mess you up taking the test. Most of the stuff on the test you will never use day to day.

You will dabble in different types of real estate your first year and find one niche more interesting than the others. This will be the one you get extensive training in to be the expert on.

good luck

Thanks Super,

I will stop worrying about it. When i went to pick up my books at RE school, one of the ladies there asked me about it. She asked if i already had a broker i was going to work with or, what area of town i would be focusing on. I started to wonder if this is something i should have done already. From what i have read on here, i thought it was an odd question.

Thanks again! School starts tomorrow, i better get ready!

When I started I had options. Do i want to work in the nearby small city? A suburb of the city? Or do I want to focus on the huge second and vacation home market nearby.

After a year or so, I realized the city and the commercial aspect i didn't like to much. Working with investors and business owners was not my cup of tea (even though I myself am a novice investor).

I was way more comfortable in the second home market and the smaller towns and decided to focus on it.

Your calling will find you, as others have said, you probably need to dabble a bit to figure it out.

Good luck!
