Hey there, lately I have been considering the real estate route as my mom is a very successful realtor and i have the resources to do fairly well myself i think. I live in Alberta canada but have been considering moving to a larger city in the states to become a realtor, after learning the ropes and assisting my mom here. Just curious, I have seen agents that sell only more high end properties and was wondering how I would go about taking that route once I move to the states? Should I try and get in as an assistant for a already established and well known agent? or just try and start on my own, although i dont think i could just jump into higher end properties right off the bat. I dont mind working my way up as i know its going to take a few years to get my name out there, but how do i start to work my way towards the more high end stuff ? thanks for any advice, much appreciated.

I showed a "high end property" here in Louisiana this weekend. 11 thousand for a 3 bedroom house!

If you decide to get your license, you're much better off taking whatever business crosses your path, at least at first. I promise you - you'll be as tickled with a $100,000 condo buyer as you will be with a $500,000 home buyer. There's a steep learning curve, and there's absolutely no reason to try to specialize in something before you have any hope of actually being a specialist. People who own high-end properties usually prefer that their agent have some experience, both in general real estate AND with high-end sales. It's not that there's a whole lot of difference between the two ends of the spectrum, selling a house is selling a house and sometimes the cheap stuff can be more difficult to sell than the luxury stuff.

But get some experience first - whereever you can get it - before you try to focus on any particular niche.

Thank you very much, I actually contacted a realtor that would be willing to take me on in california. I am going to take my courses here then see about getting set up down there. He is into more of the high end stuff and i completely understand what your saying, and i dont expect to start at the top. Its just what im working towards. thanks for the reply.
