PHP is a server-side language (unlike HTML and CSS, which are client-side). You can do some really amazing things with PHP scripts, but in order to use it your server (or host) must offer support for PHP scripting.

This script you have pointed to is a link manager. So instead of having to scroll through code and change all of your links per page, this script reads the information from a database file and then shoots it to the page calling for the data. This is particularly usefull if you have lots of links on lots of pages. Instead of changing one link on 100s of pages, you just change the information in the database (1 line) and all the pages that read off of it will change as well.

Not too familiar with it, but seems like a good idea if you have the afore mentioned situation.

Hi Carole,

I don't use it but from what I can see the biggest drawback is that the links are redirects (so clicks can be counted) and many would not exchange links with you because of that.

You may be abe to hack the script to change it and that should definaltely be done if you intend on using it.

Even my webhost's dirt-cheap $3/year plans include PHP support with a half gig of monthly traffic and 50Mb storage.

Not all hosts support PHP but if you want it it's not like it's expensive.

Also, remember that Google is not weighting reciprocal links nearly as high as one-way incoming links these days. This is where writing articles and them offering them for syndication (giving reprint rights) helps a lot.

Wow you're pretty much the coolest person I know...

The redirect thing like doug said is pretty much a no-no. But with a little research, you should be able to change it...although I wouldn't call it "hacking" PHP. Thats almost as funny sounding as "hacking" a .js or .htm that you downloaded and messed with using a text editor.

Very bottom line: if you really wanted to go the extra mile, learn PHP yourself and make your own script instead of paying for one and then learning how to alter it. Who knows, may be some fun...

Who in the heck are you talking to, MCA?

Are you insulting me because I pointed out PHP scripting support in a hosting plan is inexpensive?

Well I am not really sure what those questions have to do with the topic, or even real estate in general, but I will take a stab at your questions~

First you. After the first set of elipses I was talking to Carole. I'm pretty good with sentence subjects as well as nouns, verbs, and pronouns, so let me know if you need any more help with stuff like that.

Sinclair Lewis once said:
"There are two insults no human being will endure: that he has no sense of humor, and ..."

...and, well, that second part isn't really all that important. If you were really that offended by a mild sense of sarcastic humor, then I apologize. Your Dallas Texas culture and rhetoricaly inquisitive point of view is foreign to me, but I will make an effort to learn of it as to prevent a second offense...ok partner?

Edit: Remembered another good one for ya:
"If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved."

Carol,
Hack away at it. If it isn't too expensive up front and you don't violate copy rights by alteringit.

Make it do what you need it to do. That is what all programmers will attempt to do. If they don't have the code in their library, they will find code to do what they want and "hack" at it. If they can't find sample code, then they will write it from scratch.

It's the easiest way to do it as well. Definitely cheaper than having it coded from scratch by a pro and more fun if you like a challenge. Get a book, it's cheap and all you can do is learn a valuable skill.

[b]Drop me a private message if I can be of help.[\b]

MCA: The appropriate term is "Hack". That's what the pioneers did in the early 70's and what many programmers do today. Hack at existing code.
Please don't respond as it will be ignored, your comments show a lack of respect for others.

phplinks is a great script for link management. knowing some php is useful, but not necessary. All the output is formatted with style sheets so knowing that will give you much control. It's free, runs on most servers (Mysql required), and likely available from your current host. It makes a great addin for your site, particularly for community links. It's cousin, phplists, is another great script that is generally a mass emailer, but the front end can be used for registrations and the like.
