Hi all. We are new here! I'm curious, what are you paying for your web hosting services? We have been paying $29.95 per month for nearly 2 years now, and just found a service called MySiteSpace.com for $3.95 per month and it appears to have the exact same things.

Are we getting taken to the cleaners or if I signup with MySiteSpace.com will I regret it?

Does anyone know of them or use them?

Thanks!

Never heard of MySiteSpace.com - but don't feel so bad... We were paying $300 per month for our web hosting! (it was for 3 company sites).

We actually recently moved to a new host, CIHosting who we found through a very neat site called HostChart.com - www.hostchart.com - it lets you compare everything about hosting. We now only pay $59 per month and the service has been great!

I use bluemonkey.com - it costs 15.95 per month and Duane is awesome. He has the best support and he will personally answer any questions you have or any help you may need.

I know a few companies who use him and they enjoy the service.

Thanks for the tips. I'll visit bluemonkey.com as well and ask for Duane .

Wow - that www.hostchart.com web site is really neat. I never had any idea there were so many web hosting provider companies. I found out our "local" hosting company is really in South Dakota!!!

I'll be an expert on the subject in tomorrow's tech meeting!

Thanks for the replies.

Here's a thought. If you there are a group of you in the office, and one person is somewhat technically-savvy, everyone can pool their resources to rent a dedicated server. That way, the combined monthly can be as low as $150 - $200 (or so, depending on other things) and you can literally have hundreds of new domains without paying anything extra each month.
The overwhelming factor in a web host cost for a dedicated server is bandwidth, but these tend to be low for real estate businesses.

In my case, I have a lot of other Internet-related businesses, and whenever I need a new domain for myself or a friend, I just drop one in overnight and don't have to pay anything extra per month.

That way, I have over 30 real estate websites and don't pay anything extra each month since my servers are fixed costs, for the most part.

HTH. Good luck!

Hosting is getting cheaper and cheaper by the month, a result of the overcapacity from the .com boom. If you're talking about generic hosting, reasonable commercial hosting is available for as little as $10 a month. Even YAHOO is in the game now, starting at around $12. $3.95 is pretty cheap, though... just read the fine print...

Because of the lower hosting prices of today, many companies (like mine!) are bundling hosting along with other services. We have just launched a new site along these lines specifically for real estate:
http://www.showcasere.com

ShowCase provides hosting along with real-estate specific functionality. As another reader mentioned, it is cheaper to combine many sites in a single dedicated server to share the costs... we set up the server, host it, manage it, and customers don't have to know a thing about the net. They can edit the web pages, add listings, and manage clients all online with no develoment charges. We actually offer FREE 'basic' hosting, as we are hoping customer migrate to the 'upgraded' plans as they need them.

I have been using www.creativeopolis.com for a long time, and for £6 per month (about $9 american) they offer 100 MB, 20 emails and ftp etc. They are based in England with servers in the US. Their support people are second to none. I like the control panel interface and is extremely thorough for either new or experienced.

Well recommended!

if you are looking at webhosting, makesure they ooffer the DNS server as well. what this is is a server that when a person types in your URL, it directs it to the server that your page is on. IE the "123.345.67:4546" number that your page is actualy stored on. many of the deal sites we have found dont mention this until after you sign and you are forced to shell out another $15 a month for a dns server. Buyer Beware!

Hint: If you include some useful information in your posts that invite discussion and then suggest people contact you - it may not be viewed as a blatant solicitation.

The problem with most web hosting deals is that they are offered as part of a package by Internet Service Providers. Look for "hosting only" companies such as webstrikesolutions.com. They charge $30.00 for the first year as a set-up fee and NO other charges for the first year! Subsequent years are $8.00(!) per month. That's with 100 megabytes of space and multiple email addresses. -- Gerhard http://www.gnade.com

We put all our clients on www.vervehosting.com

$7.50/month includes a GREAT hosting package. We use it for our complex site content management system, www.ccdrealtyone.com

They give you 20 email addresses, 100 megs of disk space (you can pay $10 month and go up on those items), all kinds of easy features, a great control panel, and easy back ups.

Hey Guys,

If there is anything you want to go cheap on it isn't your hosting. The worst scenario would be for a prospect to find you and get that dreaded "Can't Find Server Page"

Now, I'm not saying that there aren't hosts that ar around $17 or so a month that have great uptime, I am just saying do your home work.

I have been through 5 different hosts over the past seven years and have found that having my own dedicated server, managed by a hosting company is the most reliable.

I use a dedicated server from Hostgator.com but there are many others out there.

I have heard good things about 1and1.biz

I pay about 450.00 month total for my own dedicated server plus a couple of shared and virtual hosts. I like to spread it around a little.
I am thinking about giving this company below a try and ditch a couple of virtual hosts
http://www.valueweb.net/dedicated/dedicated-servers/redhat.htm

having your own dedicated server under 100.00 is a pretty good deal

I pay 9.00/mo and get it all: unlimited bandwidth, unlimited email accounts, unlimited storage, php, MySQL databases, and much more.

Shop around for sure...and find a host that gives you what you want, and provides redundant backup as well. The sites I've created are all hosted by the same company and I've never had any downtime. Can't be happier with them.

www.hostdime.com I don't get paid a thing to promote them, just a very happy customer.

look into their reseller's program. I pay $18.99 monthly and can host several domain names. Think I get like 20gb of storage and forgot how much bandwidth. right now i got about 15 sites hosted on my account.

you may have a host for 8.99 per month and make there up to 6 domains and unlimited number of subdomains. Also, good hosting is netfirms (free or 5/month) that gives ability to create *.cgi powered sites. I'm working rigth now on templates for such a site with free hosting. It's pretty cool. Site will have all dynamic functionality including searches, dynamicaly generated listings based on request or interests and other things.

There are multiple providers of hosting. The key here is to find a hosting company that provides each individual domain name with its own IP address. This enables search engine optimization much better rankings in my opinion.

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum, and for one I'd like to say hello to everyone here. This seems to be a great forum for Realtors.

On the topic of hosting,

I would advise against looking for the cheapest host. From our experience, these discount hosts tend to go out of business quiet often, simply because they cant be profitable with the rates they charge.

I would also suggest looking at hosts who are able to provide a real solution for you, and not just web hosting. After all you probably want to spend your time doing what your best at - selling real estate - not managing you IT infrustructure or fiddling around with HTML code

thats my two cents...

thank you

I agree that a dedicated server is the best option if you are hosting numerous sites. If you only need a web presence with say 4 or 5 pages then outsourcing your hosting is going to be a better option. If anyone is interested I can point you to numerous options to provide the best value for what you need.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is making sure your site has a dedicated ip.

I'd never consider having client sites or any site for that matter sharing an ip with god knows how many other sites..some off which might be penalized by the serps and negatively effect your site without your ever knowing

Also, If you happen to have multiple sites, make sure your dealing with a host big enough to be able to offer you ip's from different ip blocks.

M8Solutions has brought up a valid point. I have been reading a lot of posts about dedicated servers, shared hosting, etc. but I have not heard any mention of Real Estate hosting solutions. Just thought I would mention that, since many people reading this may think they can get a Realtor website with MLS searching, etc. for $3.95 per month (and if you could, I would be wary).

Check out www.superuser.net

they have a plan that's $5 a month that does just what ahents need. No reason to pay more than that. The service is great, uptime is great, and you can control everything from CPanel - so you can easily control e-mail accounts, add extra domains and all of that from a nice web interface.

Make sure you consider more than just hosting!

Hosting is old school you should make sure there are a suite of services that come with your solution.

Having a website is evolving past simple hosting / site design. You can do much better with web applications. There are many to choose from.

There are tones of hosting companies out there right now. Alot of them are affiliates of some of the larger hosting companies.

A friend of mine who is just starting a hosting company is an seo expert. He's tying in free seo along with hosing so it kind of works out for those people who are looking to have their sites rank well in search engines.

I don't think his hosting site is up yet but he put up a forum about his services, check out the url below:

I have had great success with LunarPages - http://www.lunarpages.com/. Of all the shared hosting ISP's I've used, and I've used about 8 of them, they are the only ones that never had any downtime in the 2 1/2 years I've been with them. It's about $7 a month.

When searching for a hosting service there's plenty of things to think about. Do you want hosting only or also website management including search engine submission and site optimization? Also consider how much space/bandwidth you getting and currently using. I've had my real estate website up with Platinum1Host.com for 2 months now. I love them because you can get FREE hosting through a program they have just for realtors. Not to mention the whole website set up was cheap so I really got the most bang for my buck through them.

I don't have any complaints so far but I'll keep you all posted. You should really check them out at http://realtors.platinum1host.com

The reason for the decline in webhosting prices is the increase in broadband access. Anyone with a good broadband connection (Cable modem, T1, T3 etc) can host a website from the equipment they already have on site. The downside, of course, is you are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep.

My brokerage hosts with their DSL ISP, I host my personal site from my own equipment, and use www.dyndns.org to update the DNS listing. (http://rivalarrival.dyndns.org)
