I just purchased a Flip Video camera from Amazon.com for about $60 (for the 30 minute model. I can't see myself shooing more than 30 mns at a time for my purposes.)

Has anyone else used this camera? What do you think of it? Any tricks or tips?

I'm going to try it out tomorrow. One mistake I see agents make when creating video for their listings is to walk while filming; open the door while filming it themselves, etc... it's very jerky and amateur looking, especially when the agent is out of breath from the stairs...lol.

Hi,
I got one last year. When I used the software to upload the video and compress it it came out very jiggy (unclear). Skip the compression to such a small file if you can. The orig on your computer that you download will be much clearer. It's easy to edit. The lighting always seems to come out a bit dark though. Best way to shoot at a property is to back into a corner, keep your elbows at your side when you hold the camera up so you don't shake it and slowly to pan the room. It has a very good mic so if you say anything or cough it will pick it up. Good luck!

I love the Flip camera, I actually have two of them. One is the model you have, it was the first one I purchased when they first came out and I used that thing so much and it is still going strong.

The other versions they came out with is the Flip MinoHD and the Flip UltraHD.

The HD on these cameras makes a big difference, much better quality and sound than the original, but I still use them both.

I use them for all kinds of things but really like to take customer testimonials with them. The camera will fit on any tripod but I use one of those little tripods with the flexible legs.

Additionally I work with a lot of out of town commercial buyers and I use it all the time to send video footage of empty buildings, land, etc.

NiNi, have you had issues with losing recording time? I have lost almost a minute and I tried following the instructions on the website to restore it, and it didn't work. I also tried removing the batteries and that didn't help either. Maybe if I leave the batteries out for an hour...it's really annoying!

From reading online discussions this is also a problem with the more expensive Flips as well.

I have a Creative Vado HD and am very happy with it - it's got a wider angle lense than the FLIP models (wider=better in real estate, yes?), more memory, and longer battery life (but also a higher price tag at about $200). Keep in mind, a flip or vado won't replace a high-quality camera with image stabilization - but they're fantastic for quick and easy video.

Right now I'm more concerned about getting some simple video that regular still photography can't capture as well - like just a panorama of the back yard, front yard, bit of the neighborhood, a few moments by the pond or river (I'm getting an awesome riverfront listing this week) that kind of thing. If a house is particularly open and bright then I'll do interior. Someday I'll upgrade but I'm just taking baby steps now.

Brian,

Where can I go on one of your sites to see video in action? I'm really interested in getting video going but want to see what good work looks like to decide what camera to buy.

Thanks,

Perky - if it is panoramic shots you want, invest in a cheap tripod (I will assume the FLIP has a tripod mount -- makes it much smoother, but your idea about inserting actual video is a good one.

Absolutely agree re: the tripod. The flip does have a tripod mount. The flip saved me yesterday - got to a house to snap a few exterior shots for a short presentation, and dang it, the memory card for the Canon was still in my laptop!!!! (the digital SLR does not have any internal memory.)

So I took out the FLip that was in my pocket and shot several videos - and then with the software at the office, captured 5 stills. Not the greatest by any means but it will do for what I needed at the moment!

Anyone using the new iPhone for these types of videos?
