The office I am considering has a technology package that they sell to agents. (I assume it is optional) The package ($60) per month. Included in the package is a web site, (I would prefer creating my own with my own domain name), Office internet access, (I will likely go with Verizon which has a service you can use anywhere in town with a laptop card) and will not have a desk initially anyway. There are a bunch of other things offered such as access to realtor.com etc. My question is; do I need all this as a new agent? I would really like to pick which technology services I use even if they cost more in the long run rather than a package. Suggestions?

I would not want to use their package for my website - what happens if you leave the brokerage? the only other thing in your list that I think would be valuable to you is the enhanced listings on realtor.com - you need to enhance your listings to have 25 pics on there. However, if you do a good job on your website and blogging, you probably don't need realtor.com enhanced listings.

I did sell two of my listings last year though because someone saw them on realtor.com. One called me directly so I double ended the deal; the other called the office and the up agent sold it.

best advice: keep as independent as you can - make your own email that is not tied to your brokerage in any way, your own domain name (again, not tied to your brokerage - don't do richc21.com or something, ya know?). Make your online presence fluid enough that if you leave your brokerage you can keep your site and just switch broker names, kwim?

Echoing Perky's thoughts:
Create your own assets & branding. It creates YOUR reputation in your market - rather than your brokers or franchise.

Definitely agree w/ Perky and Malok on this question. The company's package always looks fancy, but won't do much for you, unless flashiness is your goal(I hope it isn't). I think you will find that your costs are actually LESS in choosing your own tech vs. the $60/month. I paid $47/YEAR for my URL + hosting, and I own everything. Thats it -- the only extra cost would be if I wanted to have the IDX directly on my site...

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I will meet with the Broker once more and confirm that paying for this stuff is optional, if not I will not work there.

I own another business and one of the appeals of the Real Estate industry for me is the independence it allows. I definitely don't want to get too tied down to anything with one office.

Rich,

Where in Nevada are you located? Are you interviewing brokers in the Las Vegas/Henderson area or somewhere else in Nevada? I was just curious because I would be happy to point you in the right direction if you are in my area.

Most of the website packages provided by real estate companies are subject to many limitations and also to the fact that you are never the owner of the site. A website is not just a digital file on the web; it is your source of marketing and revenue.

There are many web design companies out there that will design a decent site for you and at a reasonable cost. Also, for a one time fee and not a monthly lease.
