They filed the bankruptcy to make the Fidelity deal go through. Fidelity will be acquiring the title operations (Commonwealth Land Title and Lawyers Title), per a deal struck yesterday. This comes straight from my local rep.

Just 2 years ago LandAmerica was a powerhouse in title. Man, how times have changed.

I totally agree. For us, they were title of choice.
But then they started going downhill as far as service and responsiveness. It was weird. So, we tried another branch for a while, and it went all to Hades, too. I miss the way it was.
I've heard from any number of agents that they just won't work with LA, either. It was very sad because LA was so good for so long. Then NiteOwl got all screwed up for months on end. LA said it was a crashed server. Well, it took forever to get it back up, but data is missing. So we switched to FastWeb.
Just a shame, a real shame. Ran into a longtime LA escrow officer at the food store yesterday and she said "Oh, everything's just fine". But, I know they lost a tremendous amount of business, and a lot of their staff quit or went elsewhere. And they bought a brand-new building last year.

For some reason, people just love to predict gloom and doom In today's economic world, its not prediction but forecasting. We are sailing through uncharted waters as a global economy. I think the world will face economic diaster and its not a question of if, but a question of when. Just my $0.02 that has lesser value through each passing day. Brad PS Happy Thanksgiving
