I did a search and didn't see a discussion comparing cell phones best suited for Realtors. Hope this one benefits someone. I'd like to hear what others are using and why.

I use a Nokia N95.

Why?

1. No more taking notes while I drive or any other time for that matter. The Nokia N95, with a 12 dollar addon **please note** in the United States where driving and talking on a cell phone (bluetooth or not) are still legal, and for folks who live in "one party consent" privacy law States (like mine, both callee and caller residing in the same State), you may use the record feature of this phone. What it does is records both sides of every conversation of every call without beeping- it does this automatically. All calls are indexed in a database on the phone identified by caller id, date, duration of call, and saved in WAV format. I have saved every call I've ever made, both incoming and outgoing since I bought the phone a year ago. So no more agents saying that no appointment was made when in fact there was an appointment made with their assistant via my cell phone, no more "he said she said" basically. It's pretty nice. This feature alone has saved me many times over. And basically the convenience is nice when I don't have to write anything down. Just play it back when I'm back at the office.

2. It's a video recorder. I've taken many video tours of homes by just whipping out the phone from my pocket. These are *nice* tours uploaded to Youtube. You can add titles, fades, special effects, etc. It will allow you to take away the sound track, leave it, or add a new one. You can even add music on the sound track from the mp3's stored on the phone. Oh yeah, it's an mp3 player too.

3. It will sync with Outlook (for contacts and calendar events). I use google calendar. Google calendar syncs with Outlook which in turn syncs with the N95. I can't tell you how nice it is to be extra organized. Even the State holidays are automatically transferred to the phone and pop up when there's a holiday I may have forgotten about. Nice to know before I head to the bank or post office. Every last "to do", listing appointment, showing appointment, etc is listed right there on the phone. It has bluetooth so it syncs with my computer when I walk by it.

4. I keep current contracts on it. I can move my contracts as pdf's and sync them to the phone. It has Adobe Reader and the entire Microsoft Office suite for reading excel spreadsheets, Word documents, and will even do powerpoint presentations.

5. Has a 5 megapixel camera. I don't really use it to take pictures of homes though. I take pictures of documents with it. Basically it's my "photocopier on the fly."

I don't have a data plan as I'm near my computer for many hours out of the day. I have my web site setup to send me a text message when users fill out home information requests online. I have unlimited minutes and unlimited text messaging with Tmobile for $74.00 per month (including all taxes).

I use a Blackberry Curve from Verizon. It is fast, I can access GPS from BB Maps for free, and the web-browsing is decent for a phone. Also their email system is AMAZING and I like the feel of the keyboard. My camera on it is OK (has flash which is nice) and it also does video.

I haven't gotten into using the calendar too much yet (not really a need at this point) but I am trying to get myself off of my hand written to-do lists and onto the BB calendar functions.

Sounds awesome. I'm getting ready to get a new phone with verizon but this has me wondering!!!

I've decided I'm going to buy a Blackberry Storm when it comes out on the 21st. I like that it is supposed to have full html. As well as you can read pdf and word attachments. Never have tried blackberry e-mail, but based on all the positive reviews including on this thread it has to be good. I would be interested in the N95, but the brand Nokia mixed with T-mobile means no service at my house. And I mean nothing. Not even a bad signal, but no signal. I would probably get an Iphone, but AT & T doesn't cover my area well. So Verizon it is. That is a great idea about the recording conversations. My old broker always advised keeping a notebook by the phone and writing down every call recieved and placed, date, name, and subject. Recording seems an modern and better update to that.

I have used a WM 6 device made by HTC but branded Cingular 8525 for over 2 years now. Frankly its an older model with mono communication ARM processor meaning it can only receive data or allow telephone calls one at a time, unlike the newer version which allow both email and telephone calls to continue at the same time but it has been a durable smartphone for me using POP3 email accounts unlike blackberry needing the blackberry service in addition to wireless carrier. It is a power hog so I purchased the extended battery which makes it look like a guppy but it runs 10 hours instead of 4 hours with the OEM battery provided. I think spent as much on batteries as the phone over time.

I have access to Paragon by way of Fidelity mobile phone website to internet and the InFR for opening the GE Supra lockboxes. I have inadvertently dropped it several times on various surfaces and it still runs. I did purchase some applications to enhance it such as one program that tracks phonecalls and syncs to outlook contacts files with a history. This is really helpful when you need to track down a specific caller history linked to histograms for audit purposes.

I do want to look at the unlocked version of the next phone I purchase to see what features ATT has blocked off though to see if the extra coins are worth it though.

Hi ColoBroker:

The N95 has full html. You may want to check it out. As for the email, I haven't heard specifically what Realtors like about the email on the other phones in this thread other than email being fast. Speed depends upon the network, not so much the phone.

I had the carrier/weak signal issue as well a few years ago. But that's not necessarily related to the phone (I had a different carrier and different phone back then). The Nokia N95 is a GSM network phone. As long as you are subscribed to a GSM network, you can use the Nokia N95 - you are not locked in to a particular network (unlike what they'd have you believe).

Carriers make much of their profit by way of cell phone sales. So carriers try to team up with a brand of phone as an exclusive sales source for the phone. They will tell you that they don't support a particular phone and that may be true, but you most certainly can *use* your GSM phone on their GSM network. They just won't make any money from the sale that way. That's the reason why you have what are called "Unlocked" cell phones. Some cell phones are "locked" to a particular carrier. You simply get it unlocked, or buy one that is already unlocked. This is not illegal. And I really wish the cell phone carriers wouldn't lead the public to believe that you can only use their "supported" phones on their network. There are many sources out there (including the very wordy TOA that you signed with your phone carrier) that verify what I'm describing.
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11282_7-6381673-1.html

The Nokia N95 is *not* sold by Suncom (they were just bought out by Tmobile) and is not "supported" but it's been working like a champ since I bought it unlocked and simply popped the chip into the back of it over a year ago.

What I would look for if I were you, is find a GSM network that *does* get a signal at my house (if a GSM phone is one that suits your needs). That just leaves you with the possible issue of: are you in a contract or not? If not, then simply switch to a GSM carrier that has a signal at your house (that's what I did). Then take your pick among unlocked GSM cell phones. Just make sure you make an informed decision about what your needs are as a Realtor, and what the phones out there deliver. Take a close look at the N95, and ask me as well (I've done many hours of research on cell phones best suited for Realtors).

The automatic recording of both sides of the conversations without beeping was a HUGE plus for me, and a year ago, the N95 was the only phone capable of doing such a thing.

my fiance is an it at a large firm 300 users and they have the storm for testing right now. it is great!

i use a palm centro. i like teh size adn simplicity. when it comes to a strait pda, i think palm is the best.

i wont argue that it is more email functional than the blackberry
i wont argue that the browser is better than the i phone.

i will say that i have tried the i phone and there is a learning curve when it comes to typing. i want a hard key to hit and hitting the key gave me some horrible miskeys

here is a list from one of the it's that was testing the i phone in a comparision to the storm. the test is considering the use of the phone for the daily activity of an attorney.

the list is not full. this is the early stage before it will be put together and presented

i phone likes and dislikes
--------------------------------

No notification light (hardware, can’t be fixed)

No camera flash (hardware, can’t be fixed)

No camera adjustments (zoom, image size, color, etc)

No video recording

No voice recording

No MMS

No copy / paste

Cannot forward / resend / save SMS messages

No Bluetooth audio streaming

No Bluetooth file sharing

No detailed / deeply customizable ringer profiles

Very weak vibrate function

Vibrate feature is a switch on the side of the device… I keep turning it on and off by accident (hardware, can’t be fixed)

Cannot create ringtones from songs you own

No voice guided navigation

Cannot disable keyboard autocorrect

Cannot search email folders for messages older than the timeframe you have set to sync to

Notes and tasks do not sync from Outlook / Exchange

Battery life stinks

Can only add movies / music / pictures via iTunes

Can only use extra space as accessible file storage via 3rd party app like air share (free from app store)

Cannot type emails or text messages in landscape mode (phone sideways)

Cannot upgrade or expand the storage capacity

Cannot change the battery (unless you have tools and you don’t care about your warranty)

Cannot run apps in the background or more than one thing at a time

We DO like…

Mobile web browser is fantastic and fast (would like flash support, but few mobile browsers have it)

Media player is best in class / movies look great (screen on Blackberry Bold is almost twice as sharp)

3G / wifi is awesome (blackberry bold has this too)

App store (tons of free stuff that is useful and entertaining) (blackberry has this in the works now, will be available soon)

Accelerometer is very accurate and makes for great gaming and general device usage (blackberry storm has this too)

Good information.

Unless the 300 users are Realtors and if the attorney is a Realtor, I don't know that the information given by those users would pertain specifically to Realtors.

The best source for what Realtor's needs are would be gotten...well...right here. You'd have to define your needs as a Realtor first. Then explain how your phone works the best compared to other phones based on those needs.

I believe there is a Universal set of cell phone needs that Realtors have (and some Realtors may not know they have a need for a certain feature because they didn't know one existed).

For example, all Realtors need to constantly write stuff down from their cell phone conversations (phone number, street address, customer name, mls number, closing time and date, etc) and often times they need to do this while driving. N95 takes care of that need by recording everything so that you don't have to write it down. Play that conversation back when you are safely pulled over.

If your needs are simply size and ease of use, then there are a few hundred phones out there that would meet those few simple needs. Whether or not you have a tough decision would come down to workload and efficiency (and your purchasing habits: rational vs emotional). I have an enormous workload and so I need to be efficient. If I can dump as much of my needs on my cell phone to alleviate the workload, then I've freed up more time to be of a better service to my real estate customers.

Integrity1,

At this point, I am going to assume that you are a representative for Nokia or Tmobile. grin

I have been using the Treo 700wx for the last year and a half. It comes with WM 5. I am waiting for the new WM Treo to come out. I believe it should be the Treo 800w. I love the Windows OS much better than the Palm OS. I hope they come out with this phone soon because my phone is starting to look really bulky compared to other phones. I also have Verizon. Service is excellent in my area. Verizon is definitely not cheap either. I think I pay $170/month for each phone and I have two phones on my account. My biggest upgrade was when I switched to unlimited minutes! That helped me so much! You should have seen my bill prior to unlimited minutes. I am talking about $900/month bills! cool

:D No, not a rep for either. Maybe I can prove it real quick without getting too off topic? I have a very low opinion of Nokia "after the sale" which is different than presales Nokia. I purchased Nokia's Bluetooth HS12 device and that expensive piece of crap (2 brand new ones mind you) I've had to send back TWICE. Each time Nokia sat on my return and put the ball in my court to provide them with a tracking number (because obviously they either lost my return, or wanted a "way out" by claiming I never sent it.) To this day, I still don't have a working bluetooth. Nokia has my bluetooth and they don't know where it is.

God forbid I ever have a problem with my N95 because I don't want to find out if the bluetooth "after the sale" group is the same as the cell phone "after the sale" group, because they.. well..to put it in a word - suck.

As for Tmobile: I didn't pick them - they acquired me (as a customer). I was with Suncom and Suncom recently got bought by Tmobile. The only reason why I chose Suncom was because at the time, and like your need, they were the only ones doing the Unlimited Plan. I got hit with a sky high cell phone bill. Once. And switched to the Unplan after that. I lived happily ever after.

Back to best cell phone for Realtors and why: You say the Windows Mobile OS and non-bulkyness is what sold you? How is the OS helping you as a Realtor? And how did that help you differentiate from any other phone?

I feel your pain when you weren't on unlimited minutes. Glad I don't suffer from that any more.

What's interesting to see here is how Realtors buy phones. It reminds me of how buyers buy homes. They give you a description of what they need, and usually end up buying something NOT AT ALL like what they described they needed. They were sold on hype, flash, emotion, impulse, and their wants. :)

Well I have t-mobile.

Grandfathered in on an old plan. I get 3,000 anytime minutes for 44.99 a month.I get unlimited 3g internet usage and text messaging for an additional 24.99 a month.

So with taxes I pay about 70 plus bucks a month for my phone.

I bought the new gphone a few weeks back that uses the open source android platform which other cell phone providers will start picking up the platform soon.

The phone is pretty awesome.Still needs some apps to work with some internet functions but these phones are an ongoing process.

I don't get to much into the dodads as it takes away my focus on sales.

Integrity1,

Thanks for the info on the N95. Verizon to my knowledge doesn't use GSM. And most services that offer GSM aren't good at my house/office. I live in kind of a valley. I do like the Storm possibly as I spend about one month a year in Panama so I like the fact the storm is supposed to have international capabilites, but not sure as the cell network in Panama is wierd. Such as all incoming calls are free minutes. You pay for the outgoing minutes. So I'm gonna question verizon on that point.

I have an antique Nokia 3220. I have hung onto it all this time because it is a faithful little beast. It's been dropped numerous times, carted around by one of the dogs, squished, sat on, and it still hangs in there. My favorite thing about it is that I can hear terrific on it all the time.

I was trying to use a friend's phone a few weeks ago, the call clarity and volume was definately an issue.

I was unfaithful and looked at LG phones two weeks ago. I could see one of those in my future, lots of features that would be useful and not alot of fluff I would never use.

I've been looking at the new HTC Touch Pro lately...

The only thing missing from all of these new phones (including the new Palm Treo Pro) is infra-red. I access lockboxes via infrared and I love having the software on my phone so I don't have to carry around a separate electronic key...but that feature is going the way of the dodo it seems....My Palm Treo 700P is still working fine for now, though (aside from the occasional hiccup) and it opens doors for me (literally) so I'm going to run it into the ground before I switch to something else...but the Touch Pro really does look pretty spiffy...

Hi ManFromTheBand. Glad to hear a Realtor mentioning a specific cell phone need related to real estate, and that you bought your Treo 700P to address it. A real estate broker associate of mine uses the Treo 700P for that very reason (to open lockboxes).

As for the infrared, the Nokia N95, like many newer cell phones, does have infrared. You can use it's infrared to send/receive files to your infrared port on your PC. But the developers at GE/Supra are the authority on who can integrate with their lockbox operations. GE/Supra thought they'd team up with one cell phone carrier for an exclusive, that being Sprint. And guess which phone manufacturer is teamed up with Sprint, has an OS suitable for writing their integration, and also has infrared? Your Palm Treo 700P.

In order for Supra to write the lockbox integration on Symbian (the operating system for N95), they'd have to see that there is a market for doing so, and that those Realtor buyers are using Symbian phones.

I'm trying to figure out this very thing. I'm trying to figure out which cell phone do most Realtors use, and why? If Realtors are buying based on hype, impulse, and things other than their real estate needs, then there is little hope that integration of things like Supra will happen on *any* cell phone. So yes, you are right about the dodo bird. Right now we can only focus on a phone that encompasses most of the real estate needs that we have in common.

As a long term user or Agent Office (previous On Line agent) it came Palm friendly. While I believe I am commited to the Agent office use for my 15 years of client notes and escrow histories, I am unhappy with the balky unstable Treo 680-its web browsing is very slow, it reboots oftern and locks up constantly. I WAS thinking about the iphone but the info herein is giving me second thoughts- no sync of my notes and tasks is VERY important, and no MMS, no cut and paste, no recording feature, blu tooth, etc etc. Is the new Blackberry the answer for you REALTORS? I do need to to a phone w/ accurate sync to Outlook, as the Outlook office sync can me mapped for a close sync to Agent Office planner for my contacts, notes and scheduler features. ANyone already doen this home work?

For reference, here's a link to the Supra E-Key Compatibility List. This will tell you which phones work with Supra's iBox (if that's what your local association uses, this is good info to have when considering a phone).

I have a Treo 700P that I've had for a bit over 2 years and overall, am very happy with it (although it can be quirky at times).

Geane:

I've done my homework based on my Realtor needs. Based on the needs you mentioned, the N95 will work for you. At least consider it as one to compare, and take a look at my previous posts in this thread about the N95. The N95 has a 5 mega pixel camera, does video, and even has it's own video editing software on the phone. I have used this countless times for video tours to be used on youtube when I was with my old brokerage.

Someone mentioned the full keyboard...N95 does not have this...they had to make some compromises somewhere. It can't be everything to everyone. I'm perfectly fine without a full keyboard -- that's what my laptop is for. I'm not typing out essays on my cell phone. N95 does have a bluetooth keyboard you can add on and use it right next to the phone - if you absolutely insist on having one. Personally, I'd rather have one of these if I'm going to be doing that much typing on my cell phone. I type at a rate of 120 words per minute and I'm going to need a regular keyboard for that speed. The difference in typing speed between the on-phone-keyboard and the phone pad keys on the N95 is negligible. For info on the bluetooth keyboard see this article:

I have the Palm Treo 700W, but our contract is up and we're evaluating newer phones. The ones we have are over two years old and are starting to do strange things (not ringing when a call comes in, instead sending the call directly into voicemail in strong service areas, locking up, etc.). It has been a strong performer, but it may be time to do some information gathering.

One feature that is absolutely mandatory for me is laptop internet access via the PDA. I often work at a school and must use their wireless network to access the internet. I refuse to pay any company $70+ per month for a wireless laptop internet card when a proven alternative is available for SmartPhones. Does anyone know if the Blackberry Storm (or any other Verizon phones) offers laptop internet access via the PDA?

I am ready for a new phone myself, I don't use all the features you guys do but I am ready to move up the latter! I really want the storm but I have Cingular/AT&T & they don't offer it. I want to change to Verizon since I have heard it's got the best reception but I have two lines w/my provider & it gets expensive to switch & pay for two.
How do you guys work out the phone plans between a business phone & personal? I am using my personal for both.

Many of the Verizon phones can be teathered (connected to your laptop to provide internet access) but last I checked, Verizon charges you an additional $40/month to turn the feature on. Sprint just includes it as part of the data plan without an extra fee.

My Treo700P can do it via bluetooth (no wires, woohoo!) and it works pretty well, too.

I pay for some kind of high speed data thing through Verizon and I think the fee is around $40 per month. Is that the same $40 your write of?

last I checked verizon charged for the data plan for the phone, and then charged an additional fee for the ability to teather to a laptop.

I haven't checked in a while, though...so that may not be 100% accurate any longer...best bet is to check with a verizon sales rep.

It's true. When I bought my blackberry storm they were selling the plans. There was the basic for just data on the storm, but then there was another one so you could use it to teather to a laptop. I pay $30 a month for unlimited data, but I didn't get the plan to use the blackberry to teather to a laptop as I don't use a laptop.

I have the Treo 700wx with Verizon.

Verizon has the most expensive data plan. I pay $50/month just for the data plan, plus another $120/month for unlimited minutes and texting. So my total bill on my first line is $170/month. I also have a second line that is an additional $150/month.

The Blackberry Storm looks like a great phone, but it doesn't have a touch button keyboard. For people that text a lot, it may not be the best option.

The best phone I have seen out right now is the new Treo Pro! It is for professionals. The only problem is that it is only for the 3G network. It cannot be used on the CDMA network (Verizon). So I guess I will have to wait a bit longer for that to be compatible or wait for a better phone.

Just when I thought the Nokia N95 couldn't get any better, it just did. The N97 will have a full keyboard and touch screen. The only thing it doesn't have that I've seen Realtors talk about here as a real estate need is the open lockbox feature.

Nokia N97, 3G, unlocked usable on any GSM carrier. If you choose T-mobile as your GSM carrier, you can have the unlimited minutes, unlimited texting plan for roughly $74.00 per month.

Feature: 5+ Megapixel Camera, A2DP, Bluetooth, Calendar, Camera, Candy Bar Form, Edge, Email Client, FM Radio, GPS / Location, High-Speed Data GPRS, Megapixel Camera, Memory Card Slot, MP3, Qwerty Keyboard, Smartphone, Speaker Phone, Symbian, Touch Screen, Video Capture, Video Clip, Voice Dialing, Wi-Fi

The Finnish mobile phone giant has dubbed its new N97 handset the "world's most advanced mobile computer", and promises it will bring users closer to the internet on the move.

The device combines a large 3.5in touch-screen, similar to that found on the Apple iPhone, with a slide-out Qwerty keyboard reminiscent of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and the T-Mobile G1. Unlike the Apple iPhone, the N97 will be able to play the Flash videos used on many websites, including our own Telegraph news pages. It also supports instant-messaging and email on the go, boasts a five-megapixel camera, and a huge 48GB of memory, capable of storing thousands more songs than the Apple iPhone and many other leading devices.

"From the desktop to the laptop and now to your pocket, the Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence," said Jonas Geust, a vice president at Nokia. "The Nokia N97 mobile computer adjusts to the world around us, helping stay connected to the people and things that matter most."

Nokia has put high-speed web access at the heart of its new device, along with one-button, 'always-on' access to social-networking sites such as Facebook. The phone also uses its built-in GPS technology to provide location-specific information. Nokia, which calls the service 'social location', said that it will enable N97 users to update their social-networking profiles with precise details about their location and find nearby friends.

I have a Samsung Blackjack and it is acting this way too- AT&T, who uo until recently has been awesome CANNOT diagnose the problem. I have been calling consistently for months complaining about the issue and all they can say is "sign another 2 year contract and we'll give you a deal on another (disappointing) phone". I told them thanks but no thanks, when my contract is up in May I am switching to Sprint. I have been a customer with ATT&T with the same phone number since 2001 and they don't even care they are losing my business with their horrible problem solving skills. And another thing, for those of you who are wooed by the "3G" network- don't be. I live in one of the best coverage areas they have and my dropped calls were so horrible I could barely use my phone. It took TEN (not exaggerating) calls to tech support and customer service to FINALLY get someone on the phone who actually knew what they were doing who told me the 3G network is full of bugs and holes, and gave me a code to program my phone to permanently not use the 3G network. So I have a 3G phone for no good reason, and now my internet/data is slow, but at least the dropped call problem was solved.

I decided the best solution to my current problem is to get a used or refurb treo that is unlocked so I don't have to renew my contract with At&T, then in June I can switch to Sprint with unlimited everything for way less money than what I am paying now. As a bonus I will be able to ditch my Supra ekey!

Careful LaceyF - I'm pretty sure that a GSM Treo will NOT work on the Sprint Network...i.e. you have to buy for either AT&T OR for Sprint...but you can't transfer a phone from one network to the other.

The Nokia N95,is the best cell phone for purchase with a 12 dollar in the United States where driving and talking on a cell phone are still legal. you may use the record feature of this phone. What it does is records both sides of every conversation of every call without beeping it does this automatically. All calls are indexed in a database on the phone identified by caller.

I currently have the TREO, but I will be switching to Sprint just for the HTC Touch Pro. You can edit documents (including power point), it has a larger screen than majority of the phones, and the sliding keyboard. I always get makeup on my keys and it drives me crazy. Plus, can you really beat Sprint's everything unlimited plan for $99?

Take a look at the Blackberry Bold - it's a new model AND it has the touch button keyboard. I have the Blackberry Curve - love it, but thinking of upgrading to the Bold.

I've decided there just isn't a perfect phone for me. I got the Storm last month. It has a number of great features, but there are also others that I have not yet been able to find. Wifi is not available, I desperately miss the today screen, lengthy call logs and speed-dial functionality that the Treo 700W had. It is also quite a challenge to tether the laptop and use it as a modem.

I thought about it but stopped when I heard it didn't have the 3mm earphone jack.

I use a BlackBerry Curve through Verizon and think it's a superb phone. It seems to have a stronger signal strength in areas that my old phone always lost service in. Also, the QWERTY keyboard is simply invaluable when trying to respond to email. I purchased the BlackBerry Storm and could only stand it for a week before returning it in favor of the Curve. The Storm was a DREADFUL phone to use and is the only phone I've ever returned. I would imagine that any phone with email access is probably a good bet for agents.

After two months of using the Blackberry storm I've found it great. I got good at typing e-mails on it. Particularly I like it for it's ability to send and recieve data while out of the country. I disagree strongly with the person above who said it is dreadful. It is a good phone in my opinion.

If you are a Realtor who refuses to use e-mail and the internet you probably could make do with a cheap average cell phone. But then if that is you what are you even doing reading this forum? I got "recruited" by a broker the other day that doesn't believe the internet helps sell real estate. He probably doesn't have a cell phone. I signed right up (sarcasm)

I use a BB curve and have for about a year and a half.

While I'm enticed by some of the newest offerings, I remember all of the bugginess in the early additions of the Treo and BB.

The other consideration is the apps you need to make the phone do what you want. Many times the applications (like the MLS) are months (or even years) behind the capabilities of the phone.

the $99 everything plan is on Sprint, i highly recommend it... add my tiny business discount and it ends up being a great deal for, well everything..I've priced everyone else and there's just no comparison right now, plus Sprint thankfully has done a lot with their customer rep dept in the last yr which im very happy about!
I'm waiting for the Palm Pre as well, I'm still waiting to find out about whether it will allow for office doc viewing/editing though. I've had a treo and it has been invaluable for email, web browsing, quick MLS lookups and HUD doc viewing. I have a broadband card for my laptop with them as well but sometimes you just want to look somethng up real quick on ur phone. Hopefully rumors are right and this phone comes out next month though we'll see how long it takes to actually get our hands on it! If anything ill go ahead and grab the Pro which I got my husband for his bday/new realtOr present...

I have the Treo 700wx thru Sprint on an unlimited call/data/text plan @ $99/mo. The phone doesn't allow me to click on/go to hyperlinks in the browser, doesn't allow frames or allow me to send video/pics from the phone. Are there any new phones out there that does all of this?

The best phone is a phone that you will answer and return calls on! The most expensive phone is worthless if you are not answering it and the cheapest phone is priceless if you are.

I have a Palm centro and it does everything. I am very happy with it and I love the full keyboard. I do not like the size of the blackberrys.

I currently have a palm 700p and it's awesome - I'm waiting on the Palm Pre to come out next month and that's when I'm upgrading. The 700wx should have no problem clicking links in the browser...and you should also have absolutely no problem sending video/pics thru the phone via email/picture mail/bluetooth...

700P works fantastic as an ekey (I got it right when it came out and have been using it for years)

I have had the Treo 700wx for a while now and I am getting bored with it. I think I might switch to the Blackberry. What is the Palm Pre you speak of? What service is it for?

I had enough of the WM6 and went BBB. I miss the touch screen aspect and the radio sensitivity of the HTC smartphone but this BBB is a workhorse. I hate the dropping of calls with the 2G to 3G switching though with ATT.

Agent007- How do you use palm for ekey? Do you need to download program or ask for local mls? Is there an extra charges for that?
I need help on this.

@Agent 007
Go to http://www.palm.com and you can't miss the Palm Pre - it's coming out next month and there's a ton of hype about it - it's only available for Sprint. New Palm OS, Multi-Touch Touchscreen, and a slide-out keyboard. (picture an iphone with better multi-tasking (can have more than one app open at a time) and a slideout keyboard instead of just the touch screen and you'll get the gist).

@dial1010
you should be able to get the ekey software for your palm from your local association/mls office.

There are two versions (at least here in FL) - one allows just access to lockboxes, the other has MLS Lookup functionality as well. There is an additional cost to use it - but I forget how much it is... To me it's worth it to not have to carry around an ActiveKey in addition to my palm.

I cannot use the ekey on mine. It is not a Palm OS, the WX is a Windows OS. It does not offer the ekey function.

Too bad the Palm Pre is only for Sprint. I have Verizon and want to change phones right now. Oh well, maybe I will just grab the Blackberry.

My office manager has a Blackberry Storm and he digs it quite a bit - I saw an offer where you can pick them up for like $70 now, too...don't remember where, though...was about a week ago?

My understanding is no e-key on Pre.

How are you going to manage to get your hands on one with such a limited supply? Can you grab one for me? wink It appears this time my premier status won't help me. There's no launch party in my city and I just can't picture camping out.

I have a Palm Treo 650 and I might consider an upgrade...but after having a bad experience with Sprint last year, I'll never darken that particular door again. (I returned the phone I purchased from them within 30 days...7 months later, I'm still waiting for a refund). I'll have to wait for this phone to be available from another provider.

Agents, agents, agents, LOL

Why does everyone have these blackberry's??

I am a Iphone users!!!!
The best thing since sliced bread, has so many more functions than the blackberry very easy to use!
They only down fall I will say is the battery life sucks but, i have a car charger so that saves me if i need it!

the apps just cannot be beat, I am a very techy agent.

New agents any one that can get email will do fine for you, so if you are comfortable with a particular type or brand stick with it or just upgrade to a version that has email functions.

Hope that helps

how much time do people spend playing with email and things on the phone instead of calling someone who wants to buy or sell? we have plenty of distractions in life! i have turned off my push email because it is a distraction. email will get answered wehn the schedule says to check and respond to email

I don't use push email - but I check regularly while waiting on other people to do things (picking up take-out at a restaurant...will check email/read news while having a beer and waiting) and will often return emails with a phone call if they are important.

update - my office manager no longer uses a blackberry storm - he bought a new imac and an iphone to go with it. I believe he gave the storm to a relative...

Palm Pre comes out on Saturday - Rock On.

I'm planning on picking it up tomorrow...but so far all of the Sprint Stores that I've called said that in order to walk out of the store with it, you have to sign a NEW contract...not just upgrade your current phone. If you're just upgrading your current phone, all you can do is have them order it for you...

I did find a mall kiosk that said they'd sell it to me right there on the spot - we'll see if they come through or not...otherwise it might be a day or two before I get it in-hand.

I'll post thoughts/comments once I have it.

So - I picked up the Palm Pre today. I got the the kiosk that said they'd let me take it from the store (rather than special order it) and that's when they told me it was going to cost another $100 ($399 with $100 MIR instead of $299 with $100 MIR). I hemmed and hawed a bit - "well, that's not what any of the advertising said, and you guys didn't tell me that when I called yesterday and asked about the phone..." - and they dropped it down to $299 for me.

I have to say I'm a very happy camper. It just integrates everything really really well - facebook, internet, google apps (yes, not just gmail...but APPS)...took about 5 minutes to get the hang of it...and another 60 to realize that I had to upgrade the operating system (with a rediculously easy over the air upgrade from palm) before it would work with google apps (what a frustrating 60 minutes that was...I thought I wouldn't be able to import/sync my contacts!).

But - once the upgraded was completed - google apps sync'd right up and overall the phone is pretty freakin sweet.

I am going to miss having my ekey software (at least until GE/Supra comes out with a version for WebOS) - but I'm a pretty happy fellah with this one.

I love my new Pre! smile I don't see an infrared port so I'm not sure we'll ever see eKey on it, but it's worth the sacrifice.

The Iphone is very useful for real estate. You can pull up full listings in the matter of seconds and show pictures to clients while you are standing outside of a property. It comes in handy. The calculator is awesome and I LOVE having Google whereever I go.

If they do something with ekey it will most likely be similar to the blackberry bluetooth fob (they already have this available for newer windows mobile smartphones...just have to wait for them to come out with a WebOS version). In the meantime, I agree - the phone is absolutely worth keeping an ActiveKey in my car for showing purposes.

I use the treo with ekey, about $17/mo in the Phoenix area. Don't know if cost the same in your location. You can do a search in the forum on treo and find other's that use it.

I bought treo few months back but added ekey last week. i loved it, yes it is $17/month where the regular key is $12 in my area. But this is way better because my phone is always with me. Spending $5 more is worth it.

Iphone. Despite the negative press, its a great device with an ever growing collection of real estate apps... besides the ipad, there is no better piece of "real estate tech"...
