Hey guys. I am really discouraged. I passed my test in may and I found a seemingly good office in june. I interviewed with the broker and he seems like a great guy. I filed my application for my license with the guy and was supposed to start training immediately. Now all of this is taking place in the course of one week in june. So my last meeting with the broker was to fill out the application and he told me that he would call me to start the month long training course for the company. I have been calling and e-mailing with no luck. I can't get ahold of the guy. Is this a bad sign? What can I do?

Yes, it's a bad sign. Find a new broker. Check with the state real estate commission to see if the application was submitted. at any rate go with another broker - one who knows how to communicate and return phone calls.

A broker that is not responsive to you is not someone you can rely upon.

When you start out, go with a broker who really does offer good training. Many franchises do, as do many independent offices. But not all do. Every office, whether franchised or not, can be run differently. The attitude and policies of the office broker make all the difference in the world. So you have to find a broker you can trust who will give you great information and support. Talk to other agents in the office you consider joining and get some of the "inside scoop." Maybe 6-9 months down the road when you know ten times more about what you are doing, then you can look around to an office that meshes well with how you want to run your business, and that offers a commission arrangement that is satisfactory to you.

If you can't count on your broker in this business who can you count on?

A broker should be there to help you along. You are there to increase the Brokers bottom line. The more he helps you, the better you do. The better you do, the better he does with his bottom line.

I have no problem calling my broker at home at 10pm. Odds are he will answer, or at least call me back. I rarely have to do it, but I always know I can.

You deserve better, and you owe it to yourself to give yourself the best possible chance at making it. Remember - you are not just there to be interviewed, you are there to interview THEM as well. I wasted 1 1/2 years on a broker who was a total turd. (I hope I can say that) Finally found the place I should have been in the first place - and now have nearly 20 listings in 8 weeks, 2 under contract and 11 buyers. - that is HUGE for this area and this from a new branch. Be choosy if you can, and if you get in there and it is not working - do NOT be afraid to trade up.

Just go to another office. It's no big deal. Remember that, the broker/office is the one that needs you... you have more negotiating power than you know.

That's a really bad sign! If he can't close a deal with you how will he teach you to do well in the business?

Would you want a doctor who never returned your calls?

How about an attorney?

Or a lawn company?

Or a car salesman?

Pretty simple, right?
