This is a reply I made on a messageboard regarding the recent updates that Google has made to their page ranking system. Read on . . .
I am a webmaster and I have sample sites listed from my main page which I suppose makes them satellite sites according to the new Google ranking system. Sounds like I may be punished for this because they are all on the same server. I do not want to go through the hassle and expense of deploying my various sample sites on multiple hosts.
Most of my sites are demonstrations of my system management utilities and as a result involve a lot of Perl coding. In addition to this, a lot of codes are shared from site to site on the server. Because of this it is not practical to deploy these coded systems across multiple hosts, not to mention the additional cost of hosting.
Another gripe I have with Google is that they will rank sites blindly just because the content matches their algorithm, this regardless of whether the site really is a quality site for that particular topic. We have all seen useless junk sites positioned above our own and it is frustrating to say the least.
In addition to this, sites that are new kids on the block are treated poorly because they are not linked to by other sites. Imagine that I make a killer site that is loaded with current and relevant content and is light years ahead of its competition. Is it likely that sites with similar content are going to link to me? No way José! I am too much of a threat to them for this to take place. Because of this Google will rank my site poorly for the simple reason that I cannot get anyone to link to me. Not a very good way to map the web in my opinion.
