This was the original question on a thread that got out of hand and was locked. I never had an opportunity to post on it since I am new to this forum so I am reposting it because I think it is an important point.

I have to meet a home inspector a few towns away on a Sunday to let him into a house. Why wouldn't a professional simply become an affiliate with the local MLS and get a supra/key and let themselves into the house. If you want to ride the train, then pay the freight. Am I being too difficult?

I belong to the MLS and pay money to have the Supra Key, now the Active-Key. I love it because it is convenient for me as the inspector. Once we confirm the appointment and get approval for access from the listing agent we have immediate access. This becomes a major convenience when I have to retrieve radon monitors as I can pick them up at my convenience (once I give them notice of course).

Yes, we are part of the process and must ride the train like everyone else, specifically appraisers. I don't use a Active-Key for the sake of realtors because I don't rely on them for business. I have been established for years and most of my referrals are from thousands of my previous clients who had a wonderful experience with me and developed a trust relationship.

When it comes to home inspectors we need to develop ourselves as a professional and make our industry a profession instead of an "industry". It takes money to make money and if you need to step up to the plate. We don't have room for part time, unprofessional whiners.

If your MLS does not allow inspectors to have Supra/Active keys then it is their problem and yours because you are missing out on convenience. That key saves me time and money.

At the same time. If an agent does not use any type of lockbox, lists a home far away from his/her office and tells me to come to the office to pick up a key...........no way. Get your butt down to the house and open it up. I draw the line there. If I am going to spend the money on an Active-Key and you don't use a lockbox then it becomes your problem.
