Assuming your site has more than one page I'd 301 each page to the corresponding page on the new site. A site wide 301 to the index page is almost as good, but a bit lazier.

A 301 will forward the 'link juice' and 'authority' of your old site to the new. Anyone above saying differently doesn't understand redirects I'm afraid. Google isn't in the business of tying you to your domain name. You can even 301 a 301'd site and it should technically follow to your new (3rd) site.

** I just realized I replied to a OP from 2008. Guess it needed another bump **

If you use a 301 redirect and point the old site at the new site then all the authority of the old site will point to the new site and all your back links will point to the new site. Been there, did that.

I agree! So much misinformation.

I had to change the URL of my website AND I put the new URL on a new host. Pointed the old domain to the new domain. Not even a blip on the SERPs. Still 1st page results for all keywords. I did hire out the "migration" BECAUSE of a lot of scary talk about doing it. In the end, not a single problem.

Just do a 301 redirect and you should be fine.

301 code means the page has been permanently deleted. So you can use it and redirect the old site ti the new URL of website. Using 301 redirect will consider the SEO done for the old URL.
Currently our company has a website at www.5662121.com and is thinking about forwarding this address to www.century21.ca/colonialrealty which is a subdomain of the national Century 21 Canada page. Although there are not a huge amount of links to www.5662121.com I would still like to keep them. Will all of these "disappear" if I redirect my traffic?

Thank you.
Yes. You can redirect from the old url to the new url.
The current backlinks of 5662121 don't loose unless someone delete them. Redirect doesn't affect them all.

Yes, it will affect your rankings. 301 will help you but to having previous rankings will depend on the keywords as well.

For those of you, thinking about changing domains, remember to use 301 to redirect from your old to your new website. That will help direct the links you have pointing to your old website to the new one.

In addition to using a 301 redirect, I'm not sure if you're registered with Google Webmaster tools, but if you are there is a tool in there that you can use to make sure Google knows about the address change. I recall reading about this a while ago when I was thinking about changing my domain name, but didn't end up doing it yet. Just something to check out, you should have a google webmaster account anyway to track what search terms people are trying in to find your site, along with backlinks and such.

Only a fraction of your link juice will pass to your new blog, even with a 301 redirect.

I agree with doug. To get benefits from previous domain links, redirect all the links using 301 permanant.
