You can get included into a lot of directories if you add a reciprocal link to your page or a "badge" to indciate that you've joined. I know of a few...

I’ve set up a couple reciprocal links on my site. Not sure if it will help much, but it definitely won’t hurt too much either. I don’t know of too many directories out there that are not link-back types. There may be a few, but I doubt they are any good.

Doubt reciprocal link work much to affect the SE listings nowadays. Well why not..a try's awlays a try.

Directories, other than DMOZ and a few Yellow Pages sites, don't do anything anymore. They're a very outdated method of SEO. When I first started, I got listed on every free directory I could find, and they still have not done a thing for me.

I agree. Directories are a pain. Forum links are good if they are not 'nofollowed' and you don't have to post 100 times before you are allowed to put a link in your post.

We still offer our own three way link exchange for free. Link must be on your homepage but if you have real estate site the link we offer is to a home inspector directory and could bne used as a tool for your real estate site.

Keep in mind that a lot of these "free directories" are free because they have little no PR value. You can have 1000 backlinks to PR0 sites and still have a website that's terrible. Look for quality directories and/or quality webpages that can back link you.

Well.. The notion of free directories is that as they increase in PR-- Your site has the potential of increasing as well. So having a small web directory that is PR2 may not do you much in the short term-- but having that site become PR8 over time can be helpful in a PR increase.

There are literally thousands of real estate directories in existent on the net and the question isn't how to find them and get links from them, but which are actually worth targeting. Just because you have a link doesn't mean Google will ever see it or credit it to your site. The best place to find worthy directories to target is doing some competitor analysis.

A great tool is OpenSiteExplorer (fyi, it's not free). Or you can use Google's search operator, link:somewebsite.com - that will give you a list of sites linking to "somewebsite.com" but the list is WEAK - especially compared to OpenSiteExplorer.
