One day part timers will realize its not worth it - that will be a day to celebrate! (Sorry part timers - believe me when I tell you that you are spinning your wheels and compromising your clients.)

I love the assessments though. Shouldn't those things be derived from regular dues? Assessments just mean they can't balance a budget.

There is a bit of confusion on the difference between monthly dues and the annual assessment.

Monthly dues are what you pay for your MLS system. That includes the software vendor used, the office staff, etc.

The assessments pay for the associations --- NAR, your state association and local association.

The reason everyone tends to think that is because MLS systems are outgrowths of associations. And, of course, many agents would love to have the MLS without the associations (which ain't going to happen). They really are different animals.

In the first sentence you used a qualifier but not so in the parenthesis. Don't make generalizations. Plenty of "full time" agents out there doing less work than "part time" agents. I work third shift 42 a week at least and can serve clients just fine.

*stomps down snark about 'part-timers'*

Decreasing members...we'll see. I called PMAR and checked member numbers back in October; there were 8,800 Realtors in Portland. I'm planning to check again on January 30th and see how much that changed with this ($500!) renewal.

staggert - I am well aware of dues vs. assessment. I don't think you get it. Look at original post. No mention of MLS there or in my response. I know those dues are separate. We are talking about the 2 assessments (operating reserve and national awareness) in addition to NAR, state and local DUES. Thanks!

You're correct. I misread the question.
