There is this cool scanner called Neat Receipts. You can scan your receipts into your PC and organize them, categorize etc. I believe the IRS accepts the scanned copies as valid.

Has anyone used Neat Receipts, and do you like it? I am wondering how well it would work as a scanner. Is it good enough to scan a clean copy of a contract for emailing or efaxing? Any input would be appreciated.

I looked into NeatReceipts before for another business I had. It had several issues that made it unacceptable to me. First and the most important is that receipts are stored in their proprietary format inside of their application. I prefer more standard formats like PDF. Another problem is that the software is specifically designed for receipts which makes it difficult to store/sort other types of documents.

i uses HP all in one printer/fax/scanner. Using PDF Acrobat lets me store documents as searchable PDFs which means I can search on my computer not only on file name but also on it's content. My household is completely paperless now, and my business is about 80% paperless. Of course good automated backup system is a key for this setup. Another advantage of using one of those all in on scanners that is has automated feeder and you can just scan your multiple pages document all at once.

I guess you could use the HP for receipts, just like the Neat Receipts machine, except you would manually have to organize your receipts, and you couldn't get the fancy reports provided by Neat Receipts. Neat Receipts does say you can scan docs and then convert them to PDFs. But for $200, I think it might be better to get an HP that does it all and just organize your receipts yourself.
