So a referral only benefits the other agent in my situation. I do all the work, and they get a share of my paycheck.

Wow, that's quite a 'tude. It ONLY benefits the other agent? What kind of referral fee are we talking about here? How can it ONLY benefit the other agent??!

#1, you have someone sending you business
#2, you now have a new customer who can possibly refer you more business

If they are such a PIA customer, then YOU should have sent them somewhere else when they resurfaced. Especially if you think that the deal "only" benefits the other realtor anyway.

Sheesh!

I have heard a lot of things lately but I've never heard an agent say they were too busy for more referrals.

I love Referrals. They are almost like free money. I don't care if someone sends me a referral and they stop looking for 12 months and then start looking again, it is still a agreement. That agent is more likely to think of me again the next time he/she or anyone else in that office needs someone in my area.

Also if you give this agent the shaft and he/she is still friends with this client you likely will never get any business referred to you by them, only bad press to all their new neighbors about how unprofessional you are. Personally I can do without that.

i got a referal from an agent this past week. house went on the market and after 2dom the house went under contract to settle on the 27th. that is worth 25% anyday!

keep the referals coming. i have been thinking about advertising to agents so that i can gatehr marketshare and offering a 35%-40% referal fee so that it encourages agents to pass off business that they might not want to deal with or dont have time to deal with. after all they only get paid if i get teh job and sell the house. on a 400k house i can still make 6k after paying a 40% referal. i mean it would encourage agents who are unproductive but have a lead or who are part timers to refer it to me. i have to work out the bugs, but i will see what i can come up with. right now this is just a daydream.

Referals are great, ready made buyers and sellers. I have gotten referals and given referals and all is good with referals in the Real Estate industry. You ever need to refer someone in the NE New Jersey area give me a call, I will take care of you and your client.
