I am almost a new agent, already starting training with my broker. I live in and will be seeling RE in the Poconos, PA. There are many many people moving out of the cities (NY and NJ) I myself am one of them. My problem is I am 21 years old and I am afraid no one will take me seriously as an agent. I am very responsible, and professional but I don't see how anyone would think I have enough brains to get the job done VS an agent that is older and more experienced. I am also concerned about the fact there are many other agents in my area although most have left the field. To me it seems most new agents are only out there to make tons and tons of money but do not really care about the people. I am not going to be one of those agents that hound people for listings but I don't want to wait for listings to fall into my lap? Where is the middle ground here?

I feel your pain on the being young part. I am 25, and when I went to buy clothes last week for work, I felt out of place in them, I never have been one to wear alot of suits and such, so when I looked at myself in the mirror, I felt I was looking at a kid trying on mommy's clothes, even though everyone else says it looks natural and professional, I worry about age as well. Good luck!

Jaclyn,

The best thing you can do is learn...

Learn your area, subscribe to online publications so that you can be informed regionally & nationally...I don't know if your MLS has hotsheets or not but, set up searches for your area & watch/learn the listings, the expireds, the withdrawns, solds, etc, etc...This will help you learn and apply the data with what your seeing "advertised"...

When you see a listing in your area has sold/closed...check out the price, concessions, DOM (days on market) and store the info in your brain... Eventually, you will get a feel and understand what people mean when they say, "Know your market"...

Watch & see what the veterans are doing...You can pick up a lot of info just from being in the office...

Leave your business card EVERYWHERE! You don't have to hound people...just be friendly...just LISTEN and engage them... (example - say you eat at a diner and you strike up a conversation with the waitress or another customer... You don't even have to tell them your an agent, just leave your card on the counter/table... (Sure most of them are going to be 86'd but, what about the one that doesn't)...

Hang your card on any cork board you see...

And don't expect it to happen overnight...plan for the long haul... It's kind of like dieting and standing on the scale, everyday...can be overwhelming...

This is, by no means, everything...just a few tidbits to get you moving...

Don't worry about what you're lacking (age, experience, etc.)...concentrate on what you HAVE...

Good Luck!

Don't worry about your age. If you exude (humble) confidence, do what you say, and stick to your guns, no one will second guess your age.

I'm 25 and I have little old people tell me I'm just a kid all the time, and they still sign right up.

If you don't make it an issue, neither will they. If someone makes a stink about it, you probably don't want them as a client anyway.

That's been my experience.

Thank you all so much! The wheels in my brain have been turning about the whole business card issue, and I tend to strike up conversations with everyone. Whether it be a waitresses, people in line, whoever! Plus, I'm one of those annoying telemarketers and you would not believe the correlation I see between the two as silly as it may seem!

I know how you feel!!!!!!! I’m 23 and fresh out of college. I started selling Real Estate about a year ago. Some people looked at me like I belonged at a Frat party playing beer pong, but I just kept working at it. Now a year later people have seen what I can do and trust me. You just have to work at it. I can relate to how you all feel about dressing up too. Sometime I bust out the suit, but to be honest I usually keep it for closing and high $$ showings. Most of the time I just keep it casual. I don’t go out in a jersey and jog pants.. Also as a side not I was the top closing, listing and money making agent in my office. FULL of veteran agents... I got a lot of respect from them because of that too. IT can be done you just need to find what works well for you.
